BehaviourWorks Australia

BehaviourWorks Australia Solving real-world problems with behavioural science research and solutions. Our research is your evidence. Persuading people is both an art and a science.

We bring leading behaviour change researchers and practitioners together to find behavioural solutions to social, environmental and organisational problems. Established in 2022, BehaviourWorks Australia is the largest applied behaviour change research unit in Australia. We continue to grow in size, project scope, partnerships and networks, however, our approach has remained the same. Our foundatio

ns were built on the belief that, by taking a partnership-approach to working with practitioners, we can bring together our research rigour and valuable industry experience to find powerful solutions to solve real-world problems. Our work has spanned over hundreds of projects with our government, industry and community partners in areas including health, climate change, energy, water, waste, pollution, biodiversity, biosecurity, education, social inclusion, finance and safety. Our central premise is that most problems can be at least partially solved by influencing the behaviours that underpin them. By using insights from behavioural science, organisations can avoid making misguided assumptions about the influences on behaviour and the types of interventions that are most likely to work. Given the complexity of human behaviour, BehaviourWorks Australia employs PhD qualified researchers across multiple disciplines. Many of these researchers have worked in government and industry and are sensitive to the systems and processes of both the public sector and business. What happens when 'Just-in-case' relies on 'Just-in-time'
? Empty shelves. It's called panic buying, but is it actually how the system works?

This article in The Conversation, co-written by Jennifer Macklin (Downes) and Ananya Bhattacharya, looks at what happens to our behaviours when lean supply systems meets a major supply bump.

While stocking up on petrol or groceries ‘just in case’ feels sensible, it can quickly lead to shortages. But our individual choices can collectively help too.

Worried about fuel? You're not alone.

In this radio interview with ABC's Jess McGuire, our own Brea Kunstler explains how the signals we send each other can increase our anxieties and change our behaviours.

Why so much litter (and how to stop it)?

Why do we litter and how can we stop this behaviour? These questions were put to BehaviourWorks Australia’s Meghan Shaw by ABC Radio’s Jess McGuire on January 8 and the answers may surprise you. Sometimes it’s accidental, sometimes it’s copying others and sometimes a couple of fake eyeballs might dissuade littering.

From gamifying litter disposal to songs that might change bad behaviours, grab a coffee and find out how we can do the right thing and stop dropping stuff.
