Everyone wants to be seen as “high-performing.”

But no one talks about the cost of being the one who always steps up.

Last Thursday, we explored over-functioning—
where it comes from, how it shows up, and why it keeps so many capable people stuck.

What stood out most?
The honesty in the room.

Because once you can see the pattern, you can start to change it.

Missed it? DM me and I’ll share more.

“I’m too busy” — the one excuse I don’t question enough.

I’m too busy.
I’ve got too much on.
Things are just crazy right now.

These are just some of the things I say when I’m trying to explain why I have or haven’t done something.

Maybe you’re familiar with it too. It’s the thing that comes up when you haven’t had the conversation you know you need to have. Or when you keep putting off the task that actually matters. Or even when you don’t give yourself the break you probably need.

And the thing is… it feels real. And sometimes, it is.

But if I’m honest, I create my busyness. So now when “I’m too busy” comes up, I’ve started asking myself:
Why am I so busy?
What am I avoiding?
What am I not prioritising?
What feels uncomfortable to start?

Because more often than not, “I’m too busy” isn’t just a fact. It’s a strategy. One that keeps me in motion without actually moving forward.

And I’m starting to realise that the answer isn’t always doing more. Sometimes it’s being honest about what I’ve been avoiding.

I read something interesting about burnout…

Burnout does not always come from doing too much.
It comes from doing too much of what does not feel aligned.

And that made me think about the times I have felt overwhelmed, stressed, or completely burnt out. Yes, I had a lot on my plate but I have also had seasons where my plate was just as full and I felt energised. Clear. Even excited.

So what was the difference?
Alignment.

Not everything I was doing was moving me forward. Some of it was moving me away from who I wanted to be and what I wanted to achieve. And that is exhausting.

So maybe the question is not:
“How do I do less?”

Maybe it is:
• What actually feels aligned right now?
• What am I doing out of pressure, expectation, or fear?
• And what would it look like to either let that go… or look at it differently?

Because burnout is not just about how much you're doing, it is also about direction.

If what you are doing is constantly pulling you away from yourself, no amount of rest will fix that.

If this resonates, we are diving deeper into this in my upcoming session on the Over-Functioning Trap.

Entrepreneurship…

I find it interesting how much my relationship with that word has shifted over the last few years.

From something that once felt impossible and out of reach, to an exciting opportunity that now feels within reach.

Yesterday, I had the absolute privilege of working with some of Swinburne’s incredible students as they explored their own relationship with entrepreneurship.

Some came in with solid ideas and excitement to move forward. Others shared an idea for the very first time, beginning to open their eyes to what is possible.

There is nothing quite like the shift in someone’s voice when they start to see how their dream can become a reality—and believe that it is possible. And it warms my heart to play even a small part in that experience.

So tell me—what dream have you been keeping to yourself because you’re not sure it’s possible, or you’re waiting to feel ready?

Let me take you back to university…

I’m sitting there reading my team’s report:
“What the hell is that?”
“That’s not good enough.”

Control. Alt. Delete.
“We’re doing this again.”

At the time, I saw this as high standards. I thought this is what caring looked like. I thought this is what leadership was.

Looking back… it was perfectionism.

And it followed me into my career.

Rewriting emails before hitting send.
Holding back in meetings until I felt certain.
Waiting until I felt ready to speak.

Underneath it all was fear.
Fear of being wrong.
Fear of not being enough.

I see this a lot in women in engineering.

Capable.
Thoughtful.
Holding themselves back while they wait to feel ready.
And that moment rarely comes.

Now I see it differently.

Showing up and giving it a go teaches you more than getting it right ever will. Being a little rough around the edges makes you relatable. Imperfection makes your leadership real.

And when you’re willing to make mistakes, your team feels safe to do the same.

That’s where things shift.
That’s where leadership, innovation, and growth actually happen.

This is the work I do with women stepping into leadership — learning to trust their voice before it feels perfect.

Where does this show up for you?

Ever felt like if you don’t do it… no one will?

So you:
• fix problems before they escalate
• say yes before thinking
• pick up the slack
• quietly make everything run smoothly

On the surface, it looks like competence. But often it’s a stress response.

When the brain perceives pressure, it prioritises safety over strategy — and many high performers default to doing more.

Over time this can lead to exhaustion, resentment and very little space to actually think clearly.

In this free 60-minute webinar, we’ll explore:
• why over-functioning forms
• what happens in the brain under pressure
• how to recognise when your nervous system has taken over
• how to pause before reacting

If you’ve ever felt like you’re carrying more than your share… this will resonate.

Something I’ve been reflecting on lately: my tendency to over-function.

For most of my life, when things got hard, I took charge. I stepped in, solved the problem and made things happen because that’s what I thought leadership looked like.

But I’ve realised something interesting. When we’re in high pressure situations, we tend to default to one of two states: over-functioning or under-functioning.

Over-functioning can look like:
• quickly responding
• taking control
• saving or rescuing
• giving advice
• making things happen

Under-functioning can look like:
• withdrawing
• feeling less competent
• stepping back
• allowing others to take charge

Why? Often it’s a learned response to anxiety that was developed within our family dynamics.

These patterns help us create certainty, reduce fear and keep ourselves safe. And while we may have been doing it our whole lives, the great thing is — if it was learned, it can also be changed.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with a different lens: the lens of the strategic leader.
Pause.
Name the behaviour.
Take a breath.

Then ask yourself:
"Do I actually know enough to freak out right now?"

Because leading from anxiety spreads anxiety. But leading from calm creates space, clarity and leadership.

I’m curious — when pressure rises, what’s your default pattern?

A short email from your manager can ruin your entire day. Not because of the email. Because of the interpretation your brain makes.

In high-pressure industries like engineering and construction, our brains filter information automatically. We don’t react to reality. We react to the story our brain creates about it.

That story shapes:
• how confident you feel
• whether you speak up
• how you handle pressure
• how you lead

Most people try to control their behaviour. But real leadership starts earlier in the chain.

Perception → Interpretation → Emotion → Behaviour
Leaders examine the interpretation.

Because the moment you question the story…
You regain agency.

This is the work we unpack at Women Who Lead — a room of ambitious women in engineering and construction learning to lead with clarity, confidence and self-trust.

If doing more was the answer…
You’d feel respected by now.

If you’re the one who:
– Says yes
– Stays late
– Carries extra
– Gets it done

But still feels overlooked…

You might be stuck in the over-functioning trap.

I’m running a free webinar breaking down why high-performing women default to this pattern — and how to shift into strategic leadership instead.

It’s free.
