Some days, a child may struggle to see their own strengths. That’s when the adults around them matter most.

Keep noticing the effort.
Keep recognising the progress.
Keep reminding them of what they can do , especially on the hard days.

Sometimes one safe, consistent adult who believes in them can make all the difference.

Sometimes we teach a replacement skill and wonder why the person still goes back to the behaviour.

But it’s worth asking: which option is actually easier?

If asking for a break takes multiple steps, requires finding the right person, waiting, explaining, or being questioned, while the behaviour gets an immediate response the behaviour may still be the most efficient option.

A replacement skill needs to be:

✨ easy to access
✨ quick to use
✨ understood by everyone
✨ responded to consistently
✨ effective at meeting the same need

Don’t just teach a different skill. Make the new skill easier to use.

Monday doesn’t have to mean rushing straight back into everything. 🌿

A new week can start gently.

Take a breath.
Find your rhythm.
Give yourself time to settle back into routine.

For some people, Mondays bring changes in expectations, environments, people and demands — and that transition can take a little extra support.

A slower start, clear expectations, familiar routines and a bit of breathing room can make a big difference. 💚

You don’t have to start the week perfectly. Just start where you are.

A replacement skill only works if using it actually works for the person. 💚

We might teach someone to ask for help, request a break, say “no” or ask for space, but then we also need to look at what happens next.

If asking for help means losing all independence…
If requesting a break leads to lots of questions…
If saying “no” is ignored…
If asking for space results in people continuing to follow and talk…

then the new skill may not feel worth using.

Positive Behaviour Support is not just about teaching a different response. It is also about making sure that response is heard, respected and effective.

Don’t just teach the skill. Make the skill worth using.

Sometimes self-care isn’t adding something else to your list. 💚

Sometimes it’s giving yourself permission to do less, let something wait, lower the pressure, and accept that not everything has to be done perfectly.

You’re allowed to adjust your expectations to meet the season you’re in.

Doing what you can is enough

Once the behaviour has reduced, it can be tempting to move straight back into instructions, expectations or talking about what happened.

But recovery is part of regulation too. 💚

After a peak, someone may still need:

✨ time and space
✨ fewer demands
✨ calm, familiar support
✨ reduced language
✨ connection without pressure
✨ time before reflecting on what happened

A person looking calmer doesn’t always mean they’re ready to process, problem-solve or jump straight back into the routine.

The goal is to help them recover first, then reconnect, and only reflect when they genuinely have the capacity to do so.

After the peak: support, recover, reconnect.

A little reminder to make space for yourself too. 💚

Rest, reset, and refill your cup, you matter as well. 🌿

Sometimes the behaviour doesn’t start because of what is happening right now.

It starts because the place, person, vehicle or routine has already been linked to stress before.

A room can hold a memory.
A car trip can hold a memory.
A certain staff approach, transition or routine can hold a memory too.

So when behaviour begins early, it may not always be about the current moment alone, it may be about what the person expects is coming next.

That’s why Positive Behaviour Support looks beyond the behaviour itself and asks:

✨ What has this environment come to mean for the person?
✨ What past experiences might be shaping this response?
✨ How can we make this situation feel safer, more predictable and more supportive?

Sometimes the work is not just changing the person’s behaviour.
Sometimes it’s changing the experience.

Change the experience, create new memories.

A reminder for the parents and carers who keep going, even when they’re already running on empty. 💚

You do not have to earn rest by finishing every task, catching up on everything, or holding it all together perfectly.

Rest is not something you need to justify.
It is not a reward for pushing past your limit.
It is a need.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is pause, breathe, lower the pressure and give yourself permission to stop for a moment.

Rest is not a reward for finishing everything. You are allowed to need it now.

A reminder for the parents and carers who spend so much time making sure everyone else is okay. 💚

You don’t have to be available to everyone, solve every problem, keep every plate spinning or say yes to everything.

Sometimes looking after yourself means:

🌿 saying no
🌿 asking for help
🌿 lowering the expectations
🌿 leaving something for tomorrow
🌿 choosing rest without feeling guilty

Your wellbeing matters too.

You don’t need to be everything, for everyone, all of the time.
