SILENT PRESENCES (LACQUER PAINTING ON WOOD)
Silent Presences is a contemporary lacquer painting in which the visual language is deliberately reduced to its bare essentials, allowing space for inner depth and a meditation on human existence. Rather than narrating or describing individual identity, the work focuses on presence itself.
The three human figures depicted in the composition bear no specific personal characteristics. Facial expressions are eliminated, the eyes gently closed, and the elongated bodies rendered in non-naturalistic proportions. Although the figures share a common structural form, each reveals a distinct tonality and pattern of fragmentation. These subtle differences function as an understated metaphor for the diversity of human interiority: coexisting within the same space, sharing the same silence, yet never dissolving into one another. The composition thus operates on a conceptual level, where formal proximity serves to emphasize the autonomy of each entity.
Lacquer with eggshell inlay plays a central role in the workโs aesthetic construction. Densely arranged fragments of broken eggshell form an organically cracked surface, generating a powerful visual texture while evoking the fragility and fragmentation inherent in the human condition. The careful process of layering and polishing multiple coats of lacquer produces a luminous depth characteristic of traditional lacquer painting, while maintaining a restrained and contemporary approach to form.
The golden-brown metallic tones of the background evoke a sense of antiquity and quiet solemnity, while remaining distinctly timeless.
