The last 2 years have swiftly swept up families of school-aged children into a flurry of ‘busy’ness. Parenting roles quickly evolved, requiring school-at-home coordination, additional counselling support for the fall out of emotional and social stresses and anxieties, and role modelling on an exponential level.

Are you a parent of a child under the age of 18? A child who is neurodiverse or who simply does not fit the ‘status quo’? If you are, then I may assume your parenting role would have expanded to another galaxy.

Parenting, of any child, will at some point ‘trigger our emotions’ and shine a spotlight on our shadow side.

A child’s right is to push our buttons, challenge our values and beliefs, and mess with the boundaries of our emotions, uncovering our sensitive and often submerged dormant past.

I had the pleasure of spending time with Sammy Anne on her Nurturing Neurodiversity podcast, discussing the necessity of committing to our own ‘inner work’ to become aware of ours and then our children’s emotional intelligence and what we, and they, value in life. We discussed the imports of understanding who we are, our light and shadow sides, what and why we respond the way we do, and what we truly value, so that we and our children benefit in deep and expansive ways.

I invite you to listen to our conversation and I hope that we have touched on at least one gem of inspiration that may encourage you to firstly acknowledge the goodness you bring to your children’s lives, and secondly, to raise awareness of the possibility that being ‘busy’ in life, may not be serving you and your family. Shifting from ‘busy’ to ‘being’ requires inner work, and youll find the outcomes of this way of being, extraordinary.

This certainly was a well considered conversation Sammy Anne, and a topic that is deep in our hearts at this current time. 💜
Curiosity, inquiry & confidence need far more airplay than they’ve had during previous generations. To be integrated into our living culture would create deep and greater awareness.
Encourage your children to reflect, observe, and always ask questions!

“We no longer use asbestos because brave people questioned ‘the science’

Doctors no longer recommend ci******es because brave people questioned ‘the science’

DDT is no longer sprayed on people because brave people questioned ‘the science’

Pregnant women no longer take thalidomide because brave people questioned ‘the science’

Mercury is not used as a cure, and we understand it now as a toxin because brave people questioned ‘the science’

Billions of lives saved by simple hand washing pre-surgery because a brave doctor called Ignasz Semmelweis questioned ‘the science’, put in an asylum and humiliated

At some point, the people questioning ‘the science’ du jour were shunned. They would have been censored. They would have been ignored, ridiculed, shamed and worse.
But that’s how science works. By questioning and finding and researching and observing and yes, sometimes ‘the science’ is wrong and has to be changed based on evidence.

All of the practices listed above (and there are many more examples) were believed to be safe and effective.
They were only stopped when enough people questioned them and the evidence honestly and bravely investigated.

Questioning the science is not wrong, disrespectful or stupid. It is the intelligent, mature and moral thing to do when you notice something is amiss. It is science itself!”

This is written by Lara Stewart from Hinterland Energetics.
Lara writes exactly how I would express the challenges our amazingly beautiful children and teens who are neurodiverse, experience.

When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation (if educating at school) and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like birthdays, play dates and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions and are always busy doing something fun with their friends.
But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school (mainstream) can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and homework a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parents and child alike.

This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.

Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.
Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted.

Please help me share awareness of this. Copy and paste (by touching and holding the text) onto your profile in honor of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

This certainly was a well considered conversation Sammy Anne, and a topic that is deep in our hearts at this current time. 💜

Last week I had an epic conversation with Michelle from E-Gen
(you can catch the replay here on my page – scroll down a few posts and you’ll see us pop up)!

We discussed how the current events we are all experiencing affect us, particularly how it can be more intense for neurodiverse families.

Michelle shared so much wisdom around how we can become more aware and curious about our own triggers, what’s behind our children’s behaviours, then highlighting areas for further developing ourselves through inner work.

This included exploring the 6 key emotional needs, our values as individuals and how these can differ and coincide with our children’s and families’, as well as the difference between control and influence.

She has been kind enough to provide me with a summary document outlining our key areas of discussion!

If you would like a copy DM your email address and I will send it to you 🥰💙

[Image description: unrelated photo of me at the beach with my kids, because I'm looking forward to when we can go back! In the background you can see a blue sky with white puffy clouds, the water across the horizon and lots of sand. A young boy appears to be running towards the camera, and is small due to being a distance away. In the bottom left of the photo you can just see a small child squatting down on the sand. To the right of the photo is me: a mid-30's white woman with brown/blonde hair in a ponytail being blown around by wind, sunglasses on top of my head as I squint and smile into the camera. I'm wearing a turquoise coloured fluffy cardi over a pink shirt, and you can see a black handbag strap across my right shoulder. End.]

What are Dyslexia & Dysgraphia?

Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are brain wiring (neurological) conditions that cause someone to have difficulty with reading and expressing themselves. The key signs of Dyslexia and Dysgraphia can be experienced and witnessed by challenges with accurate and/or fluent word recognition, poor spelling, decoding and comprehension abilities, poor handwriting and written and verbal expression.

I strongly believe that Dyslexia and Dysgraphia are 'challenges' not a 'disabilities' and with the appropriate literacy skills teaching/intervention and mind wellness coaching methodologies, people with both 'Dys's' can lead happy, fulfilling and successful lives! Those with these Dys's who struggle in life are highly likely to experience anxiety and trauma which potentially can lead to mental health issues.

Both Dyslexia and Dysgraphia create unique experiences for everyone - they affects people in different ways. If your child shows signs of these literacy-related behaviours, it is important to have them assessed by an appropriately qualified neuropsychologist or educational psychologist to identify whether Dyslexia and/or Dysgraphia are the cause/s of their learning challenges. It is equally essential for them to engage in evidence-based literacy learning intervention, so they receive the appropriate methods for learning, including mind wellness coaching to encourage development of their self-worth and confidence.

Most schools in mainstream education and home-based literacy programs do not teach evidence-based literacy methods. Therefore, children with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia miss out on the vital skills to enable them to scaffold their learning through their early years and by the time they reach around 8 and 9 years of age (Grade 4 and onwards), their learning in many areas begins to decline, and so does their self-worth. Heading into teenage years and adulthood with limited literacy skills almost always affects further learning and a person’s self-worth and opportunities to thrive in their life.

We will be launching evidence-based literacy coaching in small group and one-on-one coaching sessions during this year. We will also be offering wellbeing learning hubs starting around mid year. Follow this link to receive E-Gen's news, progress updates and education.....
