Jokes are rarely random.
A lot of the time, there is a sentence underneath that felt too exposed to say directly.

So instead of saying:

“I’m embarrassed.”
“I feel ashamed.”
“I’m scared you think less of me.”
“I hate that I keep doing this.”
“I already feel stupid, please don’t make it worse.”

We say:

“Classic me.”
“Can’t do anything right.”
“Story of my life.”
“I’m such a mess.”
“Don’t mind me, just failing at adulthood again.”

And everyone laughs.

Which gives us a tiny hit of relief.
But it also hides the real wound.
The joke becomes a shield.
It protects the tender thing from being seen, but it also stops the tender thing from being cared for.

So the next time you make a joke at your own expense, pause for a second and ask:

What was I trying not to say?

What self-deprecating joke do you use when something feels too vulnerable to say directly?

A regulated nervous system needs "unreachable" time. 📵

Your brain can't finish its internal tasks if new "tabs" are always opening.

YOUR MISSION: A 30-minute window with your phone in a DIFFERENT room.

COMMENT: How many minutes did you make it before checking? Be honest! 😂

“I’d forget my own head if it wasn’t screwed on.”

I used to say things like that so quickly.

Almost automatically.

Before anyone else could notice I had forgotten something, I would make the joke first.

Before anyone could judge me, I would minimise it.

Before anyone could think I was careless, lazy, scattered, unreliable, or stupid, I would package the embarrassment in humour.

Then everyone would laugh.

And on the outside, it looked like I was fine.

But underneath, I was trying to get ahead of the shame.

That is what deflection can do.

It turns a vulnerable moment into a performance.

It says, “Please don’t look too closely. I’ve already made fun of myself, so you don’t have to.”

And the heartbreaking part is that people often follow the cue.

They laugh.

They move on.

They never realise there was something tender underneath.

What is the joke you make about yourself that actually covers embarrassment?

Animals shake to release stored trauma energy, humans just stay stiff.

Today, we’re shaking it off.

YOUR MISSION: 30 seconds of "somatic shaking" before you walk into your house after work.

SAVE this and try it when you feel "stuck" or lethargic.

When separation is messy, it can be so tempting to explain everything.

To correct the story.

To prove you are not the bad guy.

To tell your child what really happened.

But your child does not need to become the courtroom.

They need to feel your steadiness.

Stop fighting the story

Defending yourself can accidentally place your child in the middle.

They may feel torn.

Confused.

Responsible for deciding who is right.

Start narrating your presence

Keep it simple.

“I’m here.”

“I made your favourite.”

“I’ll be at your game on Saturday.”

“I loved spending time with you today.”

“I’m always glad to see you.”

Let consistency become the evidence

You do not need to convince them with a speech.

Show up.

Stay calm.

Keep your word.

Be predictable.

Be safe.

Stay close without pressuring them

Your child may be carrying loyalty conflict, confusion, fear, or pressure they cannot explain.

Do not make them reassure you.

Do not ask them to pick a side.

Do not punish them for being distant.

Build the relationship in real time

Your presence tells the story.

Your calm tells the story.

Your repair tells the story.

Your consistency tells the story.

If you know a dad who is close to going quiet from heartbreak, send this to him

Silence can feel like protection to the parent.

But to a child, it can feel like absence.

One day you can look around and think, “Why does nobody notice I’m struggling?”

That thought hurts.

Especially when you have been holding so much.

But sometimes people are not ignoring your pain.

Sometimes they are responding to the message your protection keeps sending.

“I’m fine.”

“All good.”

“Nothing to see here.”

Then you turn the real feeling into a joke.

You make it funny.

You minimise it.

You deflect before anyone gets too close.

And the people around you take the cue.

They laugh.

They move on.

They assume you are okay.

Not because they do not care.

Because your nervous system has learned to hide the signal.

Humour can be beautiful.

It can be connection.

It can be lightness.

But sometimes it becomes the door you close before anyone can see what is actually happening underneath.

Then the loneliness gets worse.

Because part of you wants to be noticed.

But another part of you keeps performing okay.

Do you ever joke about something you secretly wish someone would take seriously?

Did you know staring at your phone mimics the "Stress Stare" of a predator? 🦁

Softening your gaze signals "Rest and Digest" to your brain.

YOUR MISSION: Try this during your next difficult conversation.

SHARE this with someone who spends all day looking at a screen.

The Emergency Brake. 🚨

If you’re at a 10/10 stress level, we’re using the Mammalian Dive Reflex to force a reset.

YOUR MISSION: Splash ice-cold water on your face for 30 seconds if you hit a peak today.

SAVE this for when you feel like you're about to "snap."

Breaking the "Tunnel Vision" of anxiety.

By looking for colors and distant sounds, you "orient" your brain to the present moment.

YOUR MISSION: Practice this the moment you feel a "spiral" starting.

SAVE this tool: it’s a game-changer for public speaking or social anxiety.

Advice says: “I’m gathering information so I can make a clearer decision.”

Permission says: “I need you to approve this so I can feel safe choosing it.”

That difference matters.
Advice broadens your data.
It gives you another perspective.
It helps you see what you may have missed.
It still leaves the responsibility with you.

Permission does something different.
Permission hands someone else authority over your choice.
It says, “Tell me this is okay so I do not have to feel the full emotional weight of deciding.”
And most of the time, what you are actually looking for is not wisdom.

It is relief.
Relief from self-doubt.
Relief from responsibility.
Relief from the fear of getting it wrong.
Relief from having to own a decision without someone else’s approval wrapped around it.

So the question becomes:
Am I seeking advice to make a wiser choice?
Or am I seeking permission so I do not have to trust myself?
Comment PERMISSION if you want the free resource from today’s live.
Where do you tend to confuse advice with permission?
