Gentle transitions make a world of difference â¤ď¸
When transitioning between activities, itâs important to understand what the child is transitioning from and to. Is it from a highly preferred activity to a non-preferred one? Thatâs almost a guaranteed meltdown if not handled well. In ABA, we use effective strategies to help make transitions smoother for our kiddos.
In this scenario, our little angel was playing with her all-time favoriteâher Nintendo Switch. We were getting off the train in an hour, and I also knew sheâd need a good rest soon.
So, I gave her a 10-minute reminder to stop playing (priming), then offered her some Cubeez (yes, I brought them all the way from Australia!). Without forcing her to stop immediately, I said, âHereâs the Cubeezâtime to turn off the Switch.â Giving her something low-demand and less preferred like this helps her settle and stay calm. From experience, when she focuses on something elseâeven if itâs less preferredâtransitions are so much smoother. On a previous trip, she completed a couple of these and then fell asleep peacefully.
We do something similar at bedtime. Her iPad time is from 5:00 to 8:10 PM. Alexa, our smart assistant, gives her remindersâone an hour before and another at the 10-minute mark. After that, she usually shifts to something calm like diamond painting, Kmart LEGOs, making squishies, or journaling (on my laptop, of course!). It really makes bedtime easier.
When our amazing little kiddos are given the right accommodations, they learn how to regulate so much better. All they need is a bit of consideration and support.

Tears, frustration, and withdrawal are often signs that a child is experiencing challenges in regulating their emotions or expressing their needs effectivelyânot that something is wrong with them.
These behaviours are a form of communication. For many young or neurodivergent children, especially those with emerging or delayed communication, these responses can reflect sensory overload, unmet needs, or difficulty understanding expectations in their environment.
Recognising these moments as meaningful communication opens the door to providing the right supportâthrough responsive, child-centred intervention that builds trust, reduces distress, and nurtures your childâs ability to engage with the world in their own time and way.
If youâve noticed these signs and youâre unsure what they mean or what to do nextâweâre here.
Weâll work alongside you to better understand your childâs needs and offer evidence-informed, respectful strategies that promote connection, communication, and confidence.

Have you ever wondered how kids learn to understand the world around them, connect ideas, or express their thoughts and feelings?
Did you know that Relational Frame Theory (RFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are just few powerful strategies we use in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?
đ§ RFT helps us understand how children build complex thinking and communication skills. For instance, it allows us to teach a child that a joke, a smile, and the words âthatâs funnyâ all relate to humorâhelping them develop social understanding and deeper connections with others.
đĄ ACT focuses on teaching kids and families how to manage big emotions, face challenges, and stay committed to meaningful goalsâeven when things get tough.
These approaches bring depth and flexibility to ABA, helping create lasting progress in ways that truly matter for children and their families
Together, these approaches create a foundation for teaching complex skills, building resilience, and creating real, lasting progress. Every childâs journey is unique, and by combining these evidence-based methods, we can meet each child where they are and guide them toward where they want to be.
If this sounds like something that could help your family, weâre here to support you every step of the way.

đ Supporting Autistic Children with Challenging Behaviours đ
Every child communicates their needs in unique ways, and for autistic children, this sometimes includes behaviours that may be challenging. Instead of focusing on âfixingâ behaviours, letâs work to understand the underlying needs and help them feel safe, respected, and understood. Neuro-affirming approaches emphasize acceptance, empathy, and tailored strategies that support the childâs natural strengths and preferences.
Together, we can create environments that celebrate neurodiversity and empower autistic children to thrive on their own terms.
