This is the page for our research to examine how the Australian public understand the risks associated with diagnostic medical tests, like X-rays and blood tests.
Patients often struggle to weigh up the benefits and risks of various diagnostic tests. Research shows that this can lead to poorer health outcomes, unnecessary suffering, and waste personal and public resources. We already know lots about how people view the benefits of diagnostic tests, but we don't know much about how they view risks. So this research focuses on risks.
We'll use this research to develop tools and resources to help patients make more informed decisions about diagnostic tests and screening. We aim to empower patients, help them achieve better health outcomes and help the healthcare system operate more efficiently.
We are a team of Melbourne based researchers working at Monash University’s Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Cabrini Health. This research is not-for-profit. It is funded by grants from the Australian government and Cabrini Health.
