When it comes to making sure your child is in the correct child car restraint, it’s important to focus on their size, not their age.
Why is size most important? Children develop at different rates. If you lined up 10 four year olds, you would notice that they are all different heights - you might have the next star AFL ruckman who is really tall, some who are average height, and some who are a little smaller.
This means that they’ll all have different child car restraint requirements - just like they’ll all need different sized clothing!
While you will see ages referred to on child car restraint boxes (e.g. suitable for children from 6 months to 4 years), these ages are a guide. The laws also mention ages - these outline the minimum requirements, however, research shows that there is more that can be done above and beyond these minimum requirements to keep kids as safe as possible.
Overall, focusing on size means that you are making the safest decision for your child based on their stage of development.

⭐TOP TIP TUESDAY⭐
Always check your child’s car seat before you travel🚗
Before we take a ride with our precious cargo it is important to check that the adult seat belt holding the car seat in place is connected and secure. A simple way to do this is to ‘tickle’ the seatbelt, if you can give the seat belt a slight tug near the base of the seat and it feels secure, this is a good indicator that the seat belt is still connected. When others pile into the back of the car with baby sometimes the seatbelt holding the child restraint can become unbuckled.
🟩If you are using Isofix, always check that the Isofix connectors are securely attached, and the tension indicators are green.

A small wriggle or play with a headband or hat can cause the item to slip down and wrap around the neck of an infant, or cover their little face.
That’s why we recommend taking off all headbands, beanies, or hats on babies and young children when travelling in child car restraints.

Did you know that all vehicles have blind spots - some extending back as far as 15 metres?
While reversing sensors and cameras can assist, they should never be relied upon on their own to keep kids safe. Even with these devices, children may not be noticed until it is too late to stop.

⭐️TOP TIP TUESDAY⭐️ Check that harnesses are not twisted.
The harness is one of the most important parts of your child's car seat. If it is not correctly fitted and adjusted, it may not allow the restraint to do its job. In fact, a loose, twisted or poorly adjusted harness may contribute to an injury rather than prevent.
