How I bought an ecommerce business for the price of a holiday.
It all started with an idea for an eCommerce store, which after a few beers, turned into an idea of why don’t I just buy one? That will reduce the risk and make it happen quicker. So that’s what I did.
I’ve never had an issue coming up with business ideas. I just lacked time, and if I’m really honest with myself, the conviction to execute.
So the idea of buying a ready made ecommerce business that I could grow appealed.
You’ve probably got a full-time gig, and finding the spare time to execute is tough.
The difference between making this happen and not is taking small, consistent steps. The difference between people who work for themselves and those who don’t is simple. They take action.
Here are the steps I took to make it happen (it was pretty easy)

What to do if Shopify goes down in Australia
Unlike some other eCommerce services, like WooCommerce, Shopify provides a hosted service. Think of it as a full-service eCommerce platform.

The great news is that unlike your home or office computer, Shopify has over 100 people (and growing) dedicated to making sure all the sites stay live.
First thing to check if you can’t load Shopify

Unprovoked tips: Be honest and consistent with your messaging.
This is how MONA “museum” in Tasmania collects email addresses.
They said tongue in cheek they will spam me. That made me tick it and agree!
We expect pure banter emails from them, which will get my attention (the first step in good marketing)
This won’t work for everyone, as this approach is very MONA.
Each brand has to find it’s own honest messaging that reflects the brand.

Ecommerce store owners.
Don't compare yourself to all those others posting massive Black Friday results. Most of them will have lost money.
If you discount by 50%, that is 50% of your Gross Margin (money left after paying for products).
Add on top of that ad costs, it will work out to cost to sell products.
Most eCommerce store owners don't realise this or won't admit it.
Successful eCommerce stores are cashflow positive (have more cash on the bank at the end of the month than they started with).

Proud client moment
Sold out a month earlier than planned (or dreamed of).
They produce big batches of a food product every year and have to estimate sales volumes well ahead, so this is a real win.
How did we do it?
Focused on selling direct to consumer, rather than wholesale accounts that cut into margin and are quite frankly a pain to deal with.
To do that, rebuilt the site on to make it easy for the in-house admin team to use and integrate with marketing tools like &
Marketing focused on Facebook/Insta/Google ads, but the real win was email marketing and one other secret channel.
Main messaging was limited supply and genuine rave review rather than discounting.
Now we're focusing on telling customers we sold out to reinforce that limited supply message for next year.
