Every few months, there is a new tool everyone says you “must” learn.
But here’s the problem:
Tools change.
Skills compound.
The people who will stay valuable in the AI era are not the ones who memorise every new tool first.
They are the ones who build judgment, communication, problem-solving, and domain depth.
Because AI can generate output.
But you still need to know what matters, what is wrong, what is risky, and what is actually useful.
Don’t build your career on one tool.
Build your career on skills that outlast the tools.

As an SRE, one thing reliability engineering teaches you very quickly is this:

Never trust a system blindly.

Dashboards can look green.
Metrics can be incomplete.
Alerts can be noisy.
And AI can sound confident while still being wrong.

The real skill is not just using AI faster.
The real skill is knowing how to question it, validate it, and apply human judgment before acting on it.

AI is not just a shortcut.
Used properly, it becomes a thinking partner.

But only if you know how to verify the output.

Worried AI will take your job?

That is probably the wrong question.

AI usually does not replace a complete job role first.
It starts by changing the tasks inside the role.

Writing emails.
Summarising documents.
Creating reports.
Analysing information.
Preparing first drafts.

These are all areas where AI can already assist.

But judgment, context, risk awareness, communication, accountability, and decision-making still matter.

So instead of asking,
“Will AI take my job?”

Ask this:

“Which parts of my job are changing because of AI?”

Take 30 minutes this week and audit your own tasks.

List your top 10 recurring tasks and mark them as:

AI can assist
AI can partially assist
Human judgment required

That is where your next skill upgrade should begin.
