β It's First Aid Friday! β
Today's Topic: Triaging π’
Picture this: You're the First Responser at an emergency situation with mutiple casualties. Some are screaming in pain, others are moaning quietly and one is silent with what looks to be critical injuries.
Who do you attend to first when it comes to providing help? β
The term 'triaging' describes the process of organising casualties into an order of receiving care. It is a dynamic process which can change several times over the course of responding, as the condition of casualties improve or worsen, or further help arrives.
The aim of triaging is to provide medical assistance in the most effective manner, to provide the greatest benefit π
When triaging, there are 4οΈβ£ key categories which casualties will roughly fall into: Minor, Urgent, Critical and Deceased.
Generally speaking, critical casualties should be attended to first as their injuries are likely to be more severe or life threatening. If there are multiple Minor casualties, they may even be able to assist one another π₯
By taking a moment throughout your First Responder efforts to triage casualties accordingly, you'll be able to deliver the best level of care to those who need it most π«Ά

A big congratulations and well done to one of our own, Revive2Survive trainer Luke βπ
Recently commended for providing life saving Emergency Medical Response (EMR), Luke - alongside members of his Fire Station, 92 Cranbourne - responded to a complex multi-casualty motor vehicle accident last year.
With seven patients involved - some of which were children - five of these met major trauma criteria.
Working seamlessly alongside Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police, Luke and his team were able to provide rapid patient care and emergency response management, which included bleeding control, triage and assisting with the treatment and transport of critically injured patients.
With all involved now recovering well, it was a great display of team work, bravery - and of course, the importance of knowing life saving First Aid skills!
To all involved - including Luke - thank you for the incredible work you do in our communities each and every day and for the role you played in ensuring all seven casualties made it home safely to their families. We couldn't be prouder of you! π₯°

β It's First Aid Friday! β
Today's Topic: Abdominal Injuries π©ββοΈ
Although not always visible from the outside, abdominal injuries are incredibly serious and can quickly result in death if left untreated.
With pain occurring anywhere from below the ribs to the pelvis, the abdomen houses and protects many of our organs - such as the stomach, liver, pancreas, small and large bowel and reproductive organs.
Abdominal injuries can cause serious damage to internal organs and may even result in the casualty bleeding to death if left untreated.
As such, for all instances of suspected abdominal injuries - which may include symptoms such as an open wound, severe pain, fever, pale clammy skin and blood in the urine, bowel movement or vomit, be sure to seek emergency medical help (call 000) immediately π
Remember - as First Aiders there can often be more to an emergency situation than immediately meets the eye. So remember to always keep the possibility of abdominal injuries in mind and act quickly if you suspect one at all. It may just help save a life βπ«Ά

Meet Penny π
Part of our team for around 7 months now, Penny also works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Coronary Care Unit at Eastern Health, where she looks after patients requiring specialist cardiac care, generally as a result of a heart attack or heart failure π«
With a range of nursing degrees under her belt incuding a Masters of Nursing specialising in Cardiac Care, it's safe to say that Penny knows a fair bit about hearts and what it takes to help keep them beating effectively... so you can see why she was a natural fit for our team, and is a pretty incredible trainer as well! π
Teaching all three of our core Nationally Recognised Training courses - HLTAID009 Provide CPR, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID012 Early Education First Aid - Penny says the best thing about her role at Revive2Survive is 'being able to give people the confidence to respond to life threatening emergencies and having the skills to be able to save lives.'
Having performed CPR multiple times in the Coronary Care Unit, Penny says she has also attended cardiac arrest calls in the community as part of the GoodSam ap... and although she is yet to perform CPR at one of these, she stands ready and prepared for when the day comes!
When she's not busy at work keeping or teaching others how to help keep hearts beating, Penny can often be found at the beach with her two dogs, whom she also hopes to do a big camping trip around Australia with one day.
The type of person you'd want next to you in any medical emergency, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows more about hearts than Penny - and we feel incredibly lucky to have her on our team, sharing that knowledge with us and our amazing attendees ππ₯°

Beep beep! π
Flashback to a month ago when Revvy hit the wide open roads for a quick road trip to Sydney, where she met cruise ship Anthem of the Seas, bound for New Caledonia and Vanuatu π’
Not quite a water girl herself, Revvy's wheels stayed firmly on solid ground, although it did get her thinking about some possible new market opportunities for our Nationally Recognised Training Programs... πβπ

β It's First Aid Friday! β
Today's Topic: Chemical Burns β
Chemical burns occur when corrosive substances such as acids and alkilis - often found in everyday items such as cleaners, bleach, paint thinners, battery acid and fuel - come into contact with the skin, causing tissue damage.
With symptoms varying from redness, irritation, blisters, pain and numbness, when exposed to the eye, it can also lead to vision changes or long term vision loss.
In all cases of chemical burns, it's imperative to remove the casualty from the harmful substance - ensuring you wear correct PPE whilst doing so to avoid injury yourself. Remove any clothing or jewellery from the casualty and rinse the affected area with cool running water for at least 20 minutes π§ Cover the affected area with a sterile, non stick dressing and contact the Poisons Information Hotline on βοΈ13 11 26 for further advice and instructions.
To help prevent the risk of chemical burns, always keep corrosive substances in their original packaging, well labelled and out of reach of children - ideally in a locked cupboard. Take care when handling harmful substances, ensuring correct protective attire is worn (gloves, goggles or aprons) and do not mix chemicals together, as this may cause a reaction π₯
By taking a little extra time and care, we can all avoid the risk of suffering chemical burns, whose effects are not only painful, but often long lasting as well.
