Most coaching — in sport, in performance, in parenting — is aimed at behaviour.
Do this differently. Say this instead. React this way rather than that way. And behaviour change is real. It produces results.
But it is slow. It requires constant maintenance. And it does not hold under genuine pressure — because under pressure, people revert to who they actually are, not who they have been instructed to be.
The work I do is aimed at something deeper than behaviour.
It is aimed at the observer.
The particular way a person sees their situation, their athlete, themselves — the lens through which everything is filtered before a single action is taken.
When the observer shifts, the behaviour changes naturally. Not because it was corrected. Because a different person is now in the situation.
That is the work. Everything else I do — with young children, with sport families, with elite athletes — is built on this understanding.
More this week.
