We are a learning centre located in Melbourne's Western Suburbs.

Established in 2001, the Spectrum Tuition (formerly Footscray Tuition Centre) runs weekend classes to prepare students for success at school. Stay in touch with past, present and future students and tutors and be up to date with the latest news and information. We also run Yellow Brick Code; a fun, interactive school holiday program to be run during the next September school holidays. It is design

Every child in the same classroom is at a different point on the spectrum.

A Year 9 student once could not solve a basic algebra problem. She was bright, engaged, trying hard. But something was not clicking. When we went backwards, she could not do a multiplication question. Not because she was not capable. Because somewhere around Year 5, a foundational concept had never been secured.

We have seen this pattern across 25 years and more than 20,000 students. Students are not struggling because the content is too hard. They are struggling because a foundation from years earlier was never found.

That is what our tutors are trained to trace. They do not just help with tonight's homework. They find the exact point where understanding broke down and rebuild from there.

Year levels describe age. They do not describe readiness.

Some stories take a long time to fully reveal themselves.

Here is what Alexander from Footscray wrote.

"Spectrum tuition has been a fabulous resource and experience for my daughter, in both boosting her academics and confidence. Prior to beginning tuition here, she was keeping up with general standards at school and was a little more reserved.

It's taken some time (and I employ you to be patient with your child), but she's since become a lot more confident in her own academic abilities, and that is also projected in her general self now. Her habits improved too, putting aside small blocks of time over the week to work on her maths/english.

We started tuition in Jan 2023, and our first major success came when her Naplan results showed that she was accelerated in a number of areas! This helped her receive multiple offers to great high schools!

And that's just one success of many more that followed."

When a former student comes back with their own child, that is not a review. That is a verdict.

Our founder Thuy Pham presented at The Age Schools Summit 2026 🎤

The summit brought together some of Australia's most influential voices in education, including Deputy Premier Ben Carroll MP, Shadow Minister for Education Brad Rowswell, Dr Jenny Donovan (CEO, AERO), Martin Fletcher (CEO, Victorian Institute of Teaching), Geoff Masters AO (ACER), Katie Roberts-Hull (Teach Well), and leaders from the Department of Education, VCAA, and schools across Victoria.

The theme? Shaping the future of education.

Thuy shared Spectrum's diagnostic teaching model: 25 years of research into how students actually learn, identifying the specific misconceptions behind every error, not just a grade, not just a score, but the exact concept that needs attention.

With R&D partnerships alongside CSIRO, RMIT, and Monash in education technology and learning science, we're proud to be part of the national conversation on what effective teaching looks like.

The future they're shaping? We've been building it since 2001. 🤍

I pay attention to the small details in what parents tell me. Not the praise - the proof. When a family drives 25 to 30 minutes through traffic to get to a Saturday class, and the kids still love going, that tells me something no star rating ever could. Children do not want to sit in a car for half an hour to go somewhere that feels like a chore. If they are asking to go back, it is because something in that room made them feel good about learning. That is the part that matters most to me.

Here's what Jagdeep from St Albans wrote.

"I would really recommend Spectrum, St Albans with exceptional customer service by Jenny and staff, always happy to answer queries, timely follow up and feedback, which i personally like the most when you get busy with other daily life commitments.

My daughter started 2 years ago in grade 4, and son started in grade 2 this year, both loves going there, even though it takes 25-30 min drive due to traffic. Spectrum has helped my kids with their learning, sitting habit and sense of responsibility.

Teachers doing great job by making sure kids understand the concept in class, online videos available for every week if missed any concept, or ask teacher, weekly test and collecting star stickers encourage kids with their learning, not too much homework so they don't feel pressure. Overall my kids love going Spectrum."

One of the most common things I hear from parents considering Spectrum is whether it is too late to start. Their child is already halfway through the year. Exams are around the corner. They wonder if there is enough time to make a difference. What I have learned is that it does not take as long as people think. When a child walks into a structured environment where the teaching is explicit and the expectations are clear, something clicks. Not in six months. Often within weeks. And this review from Lisa at Kew is a perfect example - her daughter joined in the last term and the improvement showed up in her school results almost immediately.

Here's what Lisa from Kew wrote.

"We're new to Spectrum tutoring and we're very impressed. My daughter joined for the last term of the school year. During classes she's engaged and challenged. She's always happy to go and enjoys her time there, and her learning has started to be reflected in her school work. We'll definitely be continuing next year."

"Will my child actually be noticed in a group?" - it's one of the most common questions I hear from parents.

The honest answer is: it depends entirely on the class size. Small enough that a tutor knows when something isn't landing, even if the student doesn't say a word - that's the real test. Because teenagers don't always put their hand up when they're lost. They quietly move on and hope no one notices. In a small group, a good tutor notices anyway. That's what the class size is really about - not just fewer students, but a better chance of being seen.

Selective entry at Year 11 is a different kind of preparation to primary school entry. The students are older, the competition is serious, and the window to prepare is shorter. What I've seen is that families who approach it methodically - not in a panic, but with a clear plan from the start - tend to get the outcomes they're hoping for. And when a student gets accepted at every school she applied to, that's not luck. That's preparation meeting opportunity.

Rajan from Kew wrote this after his daughter's results came through.

"Spectrum Kew was amazingly fantastic. My daughter did her Selective studies with them (for entry into grade 11) and she got selected in all 3 schools for 2024. They were really focused and the tutors were amazing. Always will recommend Spectrum Kew."
