This week, the children at Mannum Family Day Care, have been contributing to the garden with the new installation of a bush tucker garden as we celebrate NAIDOC Week and 50 years of honouring and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, voices, and achievements.

The children have planted a miniature lemon myrtle, native thyme, midyim berries, chocolate lily, and bush basil to get us started. These beautiful native plants will complement our herb garden and provide an additional sensory experience for the children to explore in our outdoor kitchen.

Creating a bush tucker garden provides meaningful opportunities for the children to learn about native Australian plants, their traditional uses, and the enduring knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Through planting and caring for the garden, the children are developing an understanding of caring for Country, sustainability, and the importance of respecting and valuing the world's oldest continuing cultures. They are also building practical gardening skills, fostering curiosity, and strengthening their connection to the natural environment through hands-on learning.

As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC, we are proud to create opportunities for children to learn about, appreciate, and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in meaningful and respectful ways.

✨ Celebrating Rhythm, Learning and Culture this NAIDOC Week ✨

As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, we're reminded of the importance of honouring and learning from the world's oldest continuing cultures.

Something as simple as a pair of clapping sticks can open the door to so much learning.

As children tap, clap, copy rhythms, and move to the beat, they're developing important life skills without even realising it. Every beat helps strengthen fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, listening, concentration, memory, and the ability to follow directions.

Rhythm also supports early language and early maths development. Children begin to recognise patterns, hear syllables, count beats, and explore concepts like fast and slow, loud and soft, stop and go.

Clapping sticks also encourage creativity, confidence, and self-expression, allowing children to explore music in their own unique way.

During NAIDOC Week, using traditional Aboriginal clapsticks offers a respectful opportunity to introduce children to the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Traditionally used in ceremony, storytelling, dance, and song, clapsticks help connect children with the history, knowledge, and traditions that have been shared across generations.

By learning through music, movement, and storytelling, we foster curiosity, respect, and appreciation for First Nations values that can stay with children for a lifetime.

🖤💛❤️ Happy NAIDOC Week: 50 deadly years! Let's continue to listen, learn, and celebrate together.

Good morning everyone,

Today I thought I'd share an upgrade to our entrance the children have been engaging with a lot recently. Large wall mural with Australian native animals. Possums, emus, kookaburra, dingo, kangaroo, frilled neck lizard, wombat, platypus, tasmanian devil, tawny frogmouth, cockatoos and koala. During NAIDOC Week - these children will be exploring yarns with these animals and hopefully developing additional language skills along the way.

Good morning everyone,

It's no secrete out little people love painting. This week they have been exploring the multi-sided easel print making station. Applying paint to their side, then using paper to press and pull away. Then the children can choose to use more paint or clean it off for a new painting or ready for the next person. Learning to return the station ready for the next person shows respect within our environment.
