Cooking with Toddlers is Fun and Helps Us Learn!
By Olivia
Cooking with toddlers is a wonderful way to learn, play, and spend time together. Little children love to help mix, pour, stir, and taste. It makes them feel proud when they can join in.
Cooking supports the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) by helping children grow through play-based learning and real-life experiences. It links strongly to Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity as toddlers feel proud when helping. It also supports Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing through healthy food choices and confidence building.
Cooking helps toddlers build fine motor skills when they hold spoons, peel bananas, or sprinkle cheese. These hand movements help prepare children for drawing and writing later on.
It also builds language and communication skills, which links to Outcome 5: Children are effective communicators. Children learn new words like mix, pour, soft, crunchy, hot, and cold.
Cooking can teach early maths too, supporting Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. Toddlers can count spoonfuls, compare sizes, and explore full and empty.
Most of all, cooking builds confidence, connection, and belonging. Sharing food together creates happy memories and supports relationships.
Cooking with toddlers is not just about food โ it is about learning, growing, and having fun together.
