🇮🇩 This week we welcomed Pak Fai, a teacher from Indonesia, to our school for a week-long exchange immersion.

Purnululu School was selected as a school in the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program funded by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Pak Fai spent the week in classes learning from staff and students about Gija culture and language, as well as our trilingual (Kriol, Gija, English) program. He also taught the kids about Indonesian culture, language, plants, and animals. Pak Fai found many similarities between Gija and Indonesian customs and practices, and felt very at home in the tropical climate!

The kids loved learning from Pak Fai and we are very excited to begin this school partnership that will see two Purnululu School staff travel to Indonesia in January!

It’s been a HUGE few days for Nawarrarram in Narrm! In the last three days we have:

🪃 Learnt from Wurundjeri elder Bill Nicholson about Aboriginal history and culture in Victoria
💛 Visited HoMie streetwear who gave us heaps of awesome clothes and even let us make our own designs on them
🎨 Done an amazing street art workshop with Gadigal artist JESWRI ジェスライ who told us what art means to him, gave us all a sketch pad, and taught us some cool skills
🍳 Had breakfast at Ormond College which is part of a big university. The breakfast room was like something in Harry Potter!
🦒 Gone on a safari at Werribee zoo to see giraffes, lions, gorillas, elephants and heaps more
😎 Seen a 3D movie at iMax about bugs where it felt like the bugs were coming straight at us
🐶 Gone to the Western Bulldogs captain’s run and met the coach and some players
📚 Visited some schools and boarding houses to get a feel of what schooling away might be like

We’ve been getting more confident riding public transport, finding our way around the big city, and interacting with strangers. We’re excited for some football games before we head back to Gija Country!

News from Nawarrarram!

We had an amazing day in Naarm (Melbourne) today. First we went to the Melbourne Football Club training and met Kozzy Pickett and Max Gawn. Then Matt and the captain of the Demons AFLW team Kate showed us inside the private training rooms. We saw the gym, the spa and the office.

We went to the National Gallery of Victoria and saw lots of Aboriginal art. Then we caught a tram to the NGV International and went to a private high security room to see our ancestors’ paintings which we chose from the archives. We had written letters to the NGV before we arrived to tell them which artwork we wanted to see.

After that we walked to the Skydeck and some of us went on the Edge. It was really fun but a bit scary. We had delicious dumplings for dinner in Chinatown with Sir Jesse and Miss Liz’s friends and family. We got slurpies and then went home and straight to bed. We are feeling really tired but so happy and good and proud that we saw the art in the gallery. We can’t wait for tomorrow!

🏉 We’re super proud of Welyenggem (upper primary) class who travelled to Kununurra yesterday for the Garnduwa
Docker’s Shield footy tournament.

Before they left school, they were asked “what’s the most important thing today?” and students replied with our school values of men’gawiya barrenha (be safe) and jimarrilang barrenha-gili (be friends)!

They played in great spirits, encouraged each other, and went undefeated to win the competition! 🏆
