Preserving the outdoors is a responsibility we take to heart at Higher Ground. In the second installment of our Leave No Trace series, we explore how to minimize our impact on the wilderness by choosing to Stick to Durable Surfaces when camping and hiking.

Here are some valuable tips to help you enjoy nature without leaving a trace:

• Stick to durable surfaces like maintained trails and designated campsites, rock, gravel, sand, dry grasses, or snow.
• Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams.
• Remember, good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary.
• In popular areas, concentrate use on existing trails and campsites. Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when it’s wet or muddy. Keep campsites small and focus activities in areas where vegetation is absent.
• In pristine areas, disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails. Avoid places where impacts are just beginning.

By adhering to these principles, we can ensure that our natural spaces remain unspoiled for generations to come. Stay tuned for more Leave No Trace insights from HIgher Ground. 🌿🚶‍♂️

At Higher Ground, we believe that preparation is key to preserving the beauty of our natural spaces. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or new to the wilderness, following Leave No Trace principles is essential.

Here are some steps to ensure you’re making the most of your outdoor experience while leaving no trace:

• Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.
• Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.
• Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.
• Visit in small groups when possible. Consider splitting larger groups into smaller, more manageable ones.
• Repackage food to minimize waste.
• Use a map and compass or GPS to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns, or flagging.

Together, we can enjoy and protect our beautiful natural spaces. Stay tuned for more Leave No Trace tips from Higher Ground. 🏞️🗺️
