The Northampton shire president has questioned why a Danish-owned green hydrogen project is being fast-tracked by the Australian government.

The Federal government has announced four pilot projects under the Investor Front Door Scheme, touted to firm up the nation's fuel and critical minerals supply.

The controversial Murchison Green Hydrogen project, based in Kalbarri, was selected to receive extra help to navigate approval processes and secure funding.

Northampton shire president Liz Sudlow says Australia won't realise much benefit from propping up the foreign-owned project.

"Let's be honest, this is a multi-national overseas company and none of the benefit of it will go directly [to Australia]," she says.

"We won't been getting the green ammonia or the advantage with energy - it's all going off shore."
