We’re excited to come together to see the Komet dancers from Mer (Murray Island) to sing, learn and share culture with one another. 🎶🌏
It’s a wonderful opportunity for educators to connect, listen, celebrate and learn through culture, story, dance and community.

September brings us another month of opportunities to pause, reflect, learn and connect through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and our relationship with Mother Earth and Her Gifts. 🧡💚💙

As you look through our September Significant Dates, we are wondering…

Meet Ashleigh Wanganeen ☀️

Ashleigh is a Narungga & Ngarrindjeri woman and contemporary Aboriginal artist behind Dreaming In Dots , and someone who has become a really special part of our On Country Experiences.

Since the very beginning, Ashleigh has created a collaborative travelling artwork at every On Country Experience. Each educator contributes to the piece, creating something together that reflects connection, culture, shared learning and their time on Country.

But the journey doesn’t end there..

The finished artwork travels back into early learning services across Australia, where it becomes something educators and children can gather around, reflect on and continue conversations about their On Country learning.

We love knowing that a piece created together on Country continues to hold meaning long after the experience has finished.

It’s become such a special part of our On Country Experiences, and we’re so excited to welcome Ashleigh back to Townsville in 2026 to create another piece together.

What books are you going to focus on during Book Week?

And have you thought about how Culture can be introduced through books written and illustrated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples? 👣

This year, Children’s Book Week celebrates:

🎶 A Symphony of Stories 🎶

So our Wednesday Wondering is…

Whose stories are part of your symphony?

Book Week provides a beautiful opportunity to intentionally weave Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, stories, authors and illustrators into children’s reading experiences. 🧡💚💙

📖 Explore books written and illustrated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

👣 Choose stories that connect children with Country, Culture, family, language and community.

🎨 Go beyond the story itself. Find out about the author and illustrator. Who are they? Where are they from? What can you learn about the person behind the story or artwork?

🗺️ Look locally.
Do you know any Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander authors, storytellers or illustrators from your local community or region?

Could you invite someone into your service to share a story, read with the children or simply sit and yarn?

And perhaps most importantly…

What happens to these books when Book Week is over?

Keep them visible.
Keep reading them.
Keep exploring them.
Keep adding new voices and stories to your collection.

Because embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives isn’t about finding one book for one special week.

It is about ensuring our Future Old People grow up experiencing a rich symphony of stories, voices, cultures and perspectives throughout the year. 🎶📚👣

Sometimes the most powerful professional learning happens when we step outside the everyday when we listen, experience, connect and learn together.

We have three very different learning experiences coming up, each offering an opportunity to deepen your knowledge, challenge your thinking and take meaningful learning back into your service, school or community.

🎈 CAIRNS – Child Safeguarding Through a Cultural Lens
📅 Saturday 29 August
Explore the Universal Principle and the Child Safe Standards through a cultural lens and discover practical ways to move safeguarding beyond policy and into everyday practice.

🚌 STORIES FROM CHERBOURG TOUR
📅 Saturday 5 September
Walk alongside community, listen to stories and deepen your understanding of the history, strength and resilience of Cherbourg.

👣 TOWNSVILLE – On Country Learning Experience
📅 25–27 September
Three days of connection, culture and hands-on learning with opportunities to learn on Country, with community and from community.

✨ Three opportunities. Three very different experiences. One shared purpose to keep learning, connecting and growing.

🌿 CONNECTING YOUR LEARNING TO THE EYLF

Our learning experiences support educators to strengthen their understanding and implementation of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) by bringing the Learning Outcomes to life through authentic relationships, reflective practice, learning on Country and meaningful connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Participants leave with greater confidence, cultural capability and practical strategies to respectfully embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into everyday practice while supporting their Reconciliation journey, Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) and the National Quality Standard (NQS).

This is professional learning you can experience, reflect on and take back into your everyday practice. 👣
