Being a university student living as a Muslim in the West, however, is unique in its challenges. Amongst the many social, political, and cultural challenges which define the tertiary student experience for many young Muslims in Australia and all across the Western world, the deficit of rigorous K-12 Islamic education and the inaccessibility of Islamic education for young adults thereafter, poses a
serious and often ignored threat to the Islam of many people.
- The feelings of alienation, inadequacy, and apathy that emerge from an inability to recite the Quran, recall Islamic teachings or resonate with the religion and religious, are all too common amongst young Muslim adults today. This is, to a large extent, due to the existing organizational, cultural, and generational barriers which exist between traditional Islamic spaces and young Muslim adults.
- Wartaqi aims to contend with this challenge by breaking the barriers between Australian Muslim university students and the Quran and assisting them in fostering a deep relationship with it.
- Further, it aims to serve as a space for spiritual nurturing and a community of kinship, distinguished by its focus on and accessibility to young Muslim adults irrespective of their background, education, or location.
