Athletic development isn’t one exercise, one drill or one physical quality.

It starts with movement.

Then we develop control.

We learn to produce force, absorb it and redirect it.

We introduce reaction, decision-making and adaptability.

And eventually we ask the athlete to put it all together.

MOVE → CONTROL → PRODUCE → ABSORB → REACT → ADAPT → PERFORM

Build the mover.

Then build the athlete.

That’s what Baseline Behaviour is about.

Follow Baseline Behaviour for a different approach to athletic development.

Progression isn’t about finding the hardest-looking version of an exercise.

Start with the movement.

Develop control.

Increase the demand when the athlete is ready.

Then add speed, force, complexity, reaction and eventually application.

START → CONTROL → CHALLENGE → APPLY

The goal isn’t to make exercises harder.

It’s to make the athlete more capable.

Are you progressing movement — or just making exercises harder?

Fast feet aren’t much use if the athlete can’t respond to what’s happening around them.

Sport isn’t predetermined.

Athletes have to SEE what’s happening, DECIDE what to do and then MOVE.

That’s why athletic development shouldn’t only be about rehearsing movements. At some point, the athlete needs a problem to solve.

SEE → DECIDE → MOVE

How often does your training make you think?

14/08/2026

Speed is only one part of athleticism.

Every time an athlete accelerates, lands, stops or changes direction, they’re managing force.

PRODUCE → ABSORB → REDIRECT

We often notice how fast an athlete can go.

But how well can they stop, control that force and move somewhere else?

That’s where athletic movement gets interesting.

Which one do you think gets trained least?

Exercises are tools. The goal is what they develop.

Move. Control. Produce. Absorb. React. Adapt.

We’re not trying to create athletes who are simply good at drills. We’re developing movers who can use those abilities when the environment changes.

That’s the thinking behind Baseline Behaviour.

What are we really training — the exercise or the athlete?

Can you control it before you make it faster?

After years of coaching, I kept noticing the same thing.

We spend a lot of time teaching sport-specific skills, but sometimes forget about building the athlete underneath those skills.

That’s a big part of why Baseline Behaviour exists.

For me, athletic development isn’t just about running faster, jumping higher or becoming better at one sport.

It’s about learning to move, adapt, solve problems and become more confident and capable.

Sport matters. Skills matter. Performance matters.

But movement is the foundation underneath all of it.

Build movement.
Build capability.
Build people.

Movement First. Performance Follows.

If this way of thinking resonates with you, follow along. There’s plenty more to come.

As coaches and parents, it’s easy to focus on results.

But years from now, children won’t remember every score.

They’ll remember the confidence they built.
The resilience they developed.
The lessons they learned.

That’s why I believe the greatest investment isn’t trophies.

It’s capability.

As a parent, what’s one quality you hope sport teaches your child beyond winning?
