Puzzles are brain food. 🧩

It looks like two children quietly stacking blocks. What's actually happening is problem-solving — pick it up, stack it, turn it, try it again the other way, get it to balance. Every one of those is a small decision made without an adult stepping in.

What I love about this photo is that nobody is being taught anything. They're standing shoulder to shoulder, each working on their own thing, borrowing ideas off each other as they go.

Big learning, small pieces.

When I started Hillside I really didn't know what to expect. The response has been beyond anything I imagined, and I'm so grateful to every family who's reached out, visited, and trusted me with their little ones.

There's one space left now — and then we're full.

Hillside Family Day Care is here 🧡 After eight years of nannying and ten years of early learning centres, I've opened the doors to my own home for a small group of little ones to learn, play and grow at their own pace. Small in size, big on care.

Every family day care educator works under an approved service — mine is White Gum Family Day Care Service.

What that means for you: they manage enrolments, fees, invoices, Statements of Entitlement and payment receipts, and as the Approved Provider they handle everything to do with Child Care Subsidy and Family Assistance Law.

Which leaves me free to do the part I actually signed up for.

Nothing here needed batteries.

No screens, no rush. Just a tray, a scoop, and however long she wanted.

We measure a good morning by how much sand ends up somewhere it shouldn't.

A bit about Hillside: it's just up to three children and me.
Monday to Thursday, 8am–4pm.
Nature-based days — lots of time outdoors, crafts from natural materials, and plenty of unhurried play.
I provide morning and afternoon tea from a rotating menu.
I nannied for eight years and worked in childcare for 10+years before opening my own service, so this is familiar ground, just in my own space now.
