We need to stop asking if a four year old can write their name and start asking if they can climb a tree or hang from the monkey bars. I know it sounds counterintuitive, especially when we are bombarded with the idea that academic success starts with a workbook, but the science of child development tells a very different story.

I see it so often. A child is struggling with handwriting, not because they do not know the letters, but because they do not have the core strength to sit upright at a desk or the shoulder stability to move a pencil across a page. A worksheet is a 2D solution to a 3D problem. If the foundations of the body are not strong, the fine motor skills will always struggle to follow.

When we push children into academic tasks before their bodies are physically ready, we are not giving them a head start. We are actually setting them up for a lifetime of physical fatigue and frustration. If a child has to use all their energy just to keep their body from slumping over, they have no mental energy left for learning.

Our educators know this. When they choose a morning of climbing, digging in the mud, or navigating an obstacle course, they are doing the deep, essential work of school readiness. They are building the core, the grip strength, and the visual tracking skills that will eventually make reading and writing feel easy.

Educators, what is the one thing you wish parents understood about the importance of play over paperwork?

Parents, what is your biggest worry when it becomes to your child being ready for school?

Often, an additional year of play can be the difference between a child simply surviving at school and truly thriving.

Butterfly Childcare always has, and always will support families in their decision to do another year of Kindergarten. 🦋

Recent research shows that delaying the start of kindergarten by just one year can reduce inattention and hyperactivity in children by as much as 73%. The findings challenge the notion that early academic pressure or medication is necessary for behavioral or attention issues.

The developing nervous system benefits most from unstructured play, movement, and opportunities to explore freely. Play allows children to practice focus, self-regulation, problem-solving, and social skills in ways that structured classrooms often cannot. These experiences strengthen neural circuits responsible for attention, emotional regulation, and executive function.

Children forced into formal learning environments too early may experience overstimulation, stress, and frustration, which can exacerbate hyperactivity or distractibility. Providing time for play, rest, and exploration aligns with natural developmental timelines, giving the brain a chance to mature before academic demands increase.

Parents and educators can support optimal growth by allowing children extra time for free play, reducing early pressures, and encouraging safe exploration. Creating a calm, engaging, and flexible environment nurtures attention, regulation, and emotional resilience, proving that sometimes the best intervention is patience and unstructured childhood experiences.

Over the past week, our Pre Kindy children have been exploring the theme of giving. Each day, we gathered in small groups to reflect on ways we can give back to others. The children showed a wonderful understanding of the importance of helping those who may not receive much at Christmas time. It was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm as they generously donated items to the Salvation Army’s Christmas food and gift drive.

“Today we commemorated Remembrance Day by reading the story “Lest We Forget.” After our story, we spoke about the symbols throughout the story, in particular the ANZAC biscuits and Poppy flowers. We also spoke about the importance of Remembrance Day and held our own minute of silence at 11 am. We decided we wanted to create our own field of Poppies, so we brought out canvases and paint. Every member of Kindy one came up to add their Poppy to the field. The end result was a beautiful collaborative art piece that is displayed on top of the lockers.”

Research shows that Finnish children start school at the age of 7, yet they consistently outperform their peers worldwide in literacy, mathematics, and overall well-being.

But here’s what’s striking:
They don’t get ahead by rushing.
They thrive because they aren’t rushed.

Because here’s the truth: in Finland, childhood is still sacred. The early years aren’t filled with flashcards, early readers, and pressure to perform. They’re filled with forest walks, open-ended play, and long, unhurried moments of discovery.

🧠 Decades of research (Sahlberg, 2015; Whitebread, 2012; OECD, 2018) reveal that this slower start protects a child’s developing brain. Early play isn’t wasted time; it’s wiring time. When children build forts, climb trees, and explore mud puddles, they’re also building executive function, problem-solving, and emotional regulation, the very skills that predict lifelong success.

In Finland, teachers don’t “teach to the test.” They teach the child. Recess isn’t a reward. It’s a right. And homework in the early years? Almost none. Because rest and family connection are also seen as part of education.

Why does this matter?
Because too many children today are burning out before they even learn who they are. We push academics before self-awareness, competition over curiosity. We teach them to chase achievement before they’ve learned to love learning.

However, the Finnish model reminds us that a child who plays deeply learns deeply.
A child who feels safe will explore bravely.
And a child allowed to grow at their own pace will often surpass those who were hurried.

So maybe the question isn’t,
“How can we help our kids get ahead?”
Maybe it’s,
“How can we protect their joy long enough for learning to bloom naturally?”

Because childhood isn’t a waiting room for “real life.” It is real life… the most formative, fertile soil for everything that comes next. 🤍
