This is so important. Early intervention is crucial! As a specialist, I’d love to see kids seeking help in Kinder, Year 1 and 2, instead of Years 4, 5 and 6! The earlier the better!!!

When children learn to read easily early on, reading feels rewarding. They read more, build vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency, and confidence. Because reading is easier, their progress accelerates.
When children struggle early, reading feels hard and exhausting. They tend to read less, which limits their exposure to words, language, and knowledge. Over time, their progress slows and the gap widens.
This is not about effort or motivation. It is about access to effective, explicit reading instruction early on. When we wait to intervene, the gap has already grown. Early identification and structured literacy instruction can prevent years of frustration, protect confidence, and change outcomes.
