Alan and Patricia's son, Ben, at age 4 learning to row on his own for the first time. Just like children who live on a busy road learn traffic awareness or those on farms learn how to interact with animals, those who grow up at sea learn basic boating skills as soon as they can walk.

Even at 86 Alan can't be kept from the water. His current yacht is a lovely sailing Don Lee sloop, built in 1984.

Granted these photos are a couple years old now, but even after 60 years at sea Alan still climbs the mast and freedives the keel to perform maintenance. Pictured here with a makeshift bosun's chair (essentially just a length of rope with a heavy shackle securing it)

In January of 2015 Alan received the OAM (Order of Australia) for his service to print media as an author of maritime publications.
It's now 60 years he has devoted to writing about his first love, sailing, doing his own surveys, soundings and photography along the Queensland and NSW coasts, as well as writing guides on maintenance and historical books of nautical trivia.
To this day his publications are the leading word on live-aboard yachting.
