As the calendar ticks over February and March we enter the Noongar season of Bunuru which is the hottest time of the year for us in Golden Bay. Hot easterly winds blow from the desert with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons.

As the dry hot weather continues, fires threaten local bush reserves or homes and we can hear the sirens of the volunteer fire trucks leaving the Karnup Volunteer Fire & Emergency Services - STN 3204.

Bunuru is represented by the colour orange and lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including jarrah, marri and ghost. Seed cones change from green to bright red, indicating they're ripening and becoming more attractive to animals, particularly the emu, that will eat the toxic fleshy outer layer.

We have noticed swarms of dragonflies at our local oval indicating the change from the cooler wetter seasons to the hot dry season.

Santa’s little helpers have been very busy here at Kalli Kids helping to prepare lolly bags for the annual Golden Bay Progress Association Inc. Christmas Picnic.

Scientist, Rachel Carson wrote; ‘A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement’.

Play which incorporates animalistic and magical thinking is important because it fosters the healthy, creative and emotional growth of a child. It forms the best foundation for later intellectual growth. Providing a way in which a child can understand the world and create possibilities for different ways of responding to it, fostering empathy and wonder.

If Rachel Carson had influence with ‘the good fairy’ she would ask that their gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout their lifetime.

For a child to keep alive their inborn sense of wonder, they need the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with them the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.
