Established in 2015, we are advocates and supporters of Te Reo Māori. Ko Te Reo te tuakiri, ko Te Reo te ahurea, ko Te Reo te oranga. Mauri tū, mauri ora.

A seed is symbolic of a new beginning, new growth and the start of a new journey. In this instance, its a journey towards learning Te Reo & Tīkanga Māori, Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to "Te Kākano o Te Reo" (The Seed of The Language, A New Journey). The purpose of this programme is:

- To provide a genuine avenue for people living in Gold Coast, Logan and South Brisbane to learn Te Reo & Tīkanga

When you learn Te Reo you start to connect with your whakapapa and where you come from. Sooner or later you discover a prominent ancestor or relative.

We Māori people have a special saying, “Tōku toa he toa rangatira... My bravery is inherited from my noble origins, who are my ancestors”.

There is an old African proverb that asserts you are the result of the love of thousands, hence, “Walk like you have 3000 ancestors walking behind you!”

So when the time comes for you to fetch your paddle, launch your waka and finally embark on your Te Reo journey, know that you are never really alone… 💚💙

In traditional times our ancestors learned that Octopuss were easy pray while Hammer Head Sharks were extremely difficult to catch and would fight to the death before being caught. This prompted the famous proverb:

“Kaua e mate wheke, me mate ururoa”… “Don’t give up easily like an Octopuss, fight to the death like a Hammer Head Shark”.

It is common knowledge the world famous All Blacks prize Māori values & beliefs in their identity. They established this proverb as their theme and mission statement for their World Cup campaign in 2015. The history books show the A.Bs went on to defeat Australia in the final and become World Cup Winners for the third time.

Learning Te Reo can be both challenging and very rewarding as well. When you navigate your journey learning Te Reo Māori, make sure you fight the good fight and give it your best effort. Dont give up too easily and perish like an Octopuss. Remember the champion All Blacks and the famous Māori proverb…

“Kaua e mate wheke, me mate ururoa… 💚💙”

This Haka is an original composition by our Te Kākano o Te Reo whānau. The sentiment behind it is stand tall and always be proud of your culture. It is intended for any milestone or special occasion. Haka is just one of the many amazing & magical aspects of our beautiful culture that provides mana, pride & honour to an event: birthdays, weddings, sporting events or tangi for example. Our Te Kākano whānau are performing it here to celebrate another successful year completed, learning Te Reo Māori 💚💙

“Mauria te taki, kawea ake! (Embrace the challenge and go for it!)”

We often share with our students, the growth is in the challenge. Challenge yourself to achieve good attendance, do the class work and complete your mahi kainga. Accomplish these 3 things and watch your reo grow, prosper and flourish 💚💙

Fast approaching nine years since Te Kākano o Te Reo first started in Australia. We would need to film a documentary to capture properly our enchanted journey thus far. We’re so busy facilitating classes these days, there’s no chance of that at the moment. So, here’s Te Kākano o Te Reo in a quick one minute video 💚💙

Our tūpuna have a helpful saying, “Mā te hāpa ka tika… We learn from our mistakes”. When learning Te Reo it is natural to make mistakes. Be humble, learn from your mistakes & keep moving forward. We love this pic 💚💙
