Lymph nodes are bean shaped glands located throughout the body π« They contain lymphocytes (white blood cells) and filter substances which travel through the lymphatic fluid. They also help to fight infection and destroy bacteria and cancer cells π¦
The common lymph nodes as displayed above, will be palpated by the vet during a clinical exam. There are hundreds more scattered throughout the body πΆπ±

No job is perfect, and I have had my fair share of burnout and wanting to completely leave the industry over the years. With some work-life balance adjustments, perspective shifts and focusing on my mental health, I am now feeling happy & grateful to still be a part of the veterinary industry π©πΌββοΈπ©Ίππ±πΎπΆπ
These things helped me and I hope they can help you too, if you are feeling a bit down and out β€οΈβπ©Ή

Performing a nail trim may sound simple enough, and sometimes it is. It can also be a difficult and stressful task for both the patient and veterinary staff. It can also take some time and lots of practice on different animals to feel completely confident with it! β¨π
π»
Most dogs and cats donβt like their feet being touched! Which is why we tell new puppy and even new kitten owners to touch and play with their feet as much as possible! Here are some tips for mastering nail trimming: πΎ
π©· Look back at previous visit notes to see how they tolerate nail trims and if precautions or a muzzle is required. You can also ask the owner this too.
π©· See how the patient reacts to their feet being touched and held first.
π©· Check if the nails are clear or black. Clear ones are much easier than black nails, as you can see the quick (blood vessel). All cats have clear nails, which makes life so much easier for kitty nail trims π±
π©· If the nails are black and you cannot see the quick, take small bits off at a time and gradually work your way up to a bit below where you think the blood vessel starts. You can apply pressure on the nail with the nail clippers without actually cutting, and if the patient pulls back or wimpers etc. chances are, you are over the quick, so trim lower.
π©· Some dogs will have long quicks. If you accidently clip too short and hit the quick, use a wet cotton tip, then dip in condies crystals. This will form a seal and stop the bleeding immediately.
π©· Sometimes less is more with restraint. If you find your patient is unhappy with the restraint, back it off a little, whilst still being safe of course. Sometimes this can help and it was the full on restraint they disliked, rather than the nail trim itself.
π©· Give lots of praise and treats during and after. Some dogs and cats love licky mats with some yummy food or treat paste on it, which distracts them.
π©· A good head tap distraction can help too. Sometimes it can take a good 3 people to perform a successful nail trim, even on tiny patients! Continued in commentsππΌ
