Dr Mike is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Dr Matt & Dr Mike’s Medical Education.

The older I get, the more important I think it is that we celebrate our birthdays.
Between kids, work, and life in general, I think it’s okay to have a day where we are a little self indulgent - hell, I wish I had a birthday every week! 😝
Today is my birthday 🎈
So I have taken the day off work.
This morning I’m going to do a workout at my favourite gym
Take myself to the movies to watch Dune 2.
Go out for lunch.
Pick my kids up from school.
And go out for a delicious dinner with my gorgeous wife
Every year I usually ask you to guess my age, but considering some people last year thought I was in my late 40’s, I’m going to skip that tradition this year 😂
✌🏽 😎 🎈

It’s like my bat signal.

It blows my mind that I am able to teach, literally millions of people from around the world, every month.

Haemostasis and the clotting cascade coming soon…
Time to make the complex, easy!

Allow me to reintroduce myself!
I’m Mike 👋
I have two kids, a 3 year old boy 🧒🏼 and a 6 year old girl 👧🏼
My wife Kel is the smartest, strongest, fittest, and kindest person I know.
We met while we were both doing our PhDs in neuroscience. My research during this time was on Parkinson’s disease. Since then, I have performed research and published in fields including spinal cord injury, dementia, pain, and medical education.
Today, most of my work is in medical education, where I teach and perform research at Bond University as an Associate Professor within the Medical School.
My area of passion is human physiology.
I love teaching people how the body works.
This passion led me (with my mate and colleague Dr Matt Barton) to create a YouTube channel and podcast (very originally) called ‘Dr Matt & Dr Mike’. We never expected either of these educational platforms to perform well, but today our YouTube channel has over 620,000 subscribers and has amassed over 45 million views.
The podcast is a Top 10 medicine podcast and obtains overs 170,000 downloads per month.
I think social media is a great platform to help educate, but the current MO is to attack, disparage, tear people down, and create useless click bait.
My style of content is very much grassroots physiology - I want to upskill you.
I don’t do “takedown” or “call out” videos - it’s not who I am and there are other people out there that do them better than I could.
I like to amplify those that are thoughtful and supportive and I tend to ignore the rest.
Together, I hope we can make this platform fun and engaging and learn a few things along the way.
Here are some great people to follow in 2024, (not a complete list):
.natter .andrealove
This is not a complete list, so if I have left you out, I apologise! But I have run out of room!

Dr Matt & Dr Mikes Medical Education | Year in Review!
In 2023, Dr Matt and I reached over 17.5 million learners on and Podcasts alone!
We reached learners in over 180 countries, including 39 out of 46 of the world most underdeveloped countries.
Our YouTube videos are embedded in over 21 Australian Universities, 28 Universities globally, and over a dozen healthcare facilities and professional body websites.
Every week I get approached by people on the street thanking me for helping them pass their medical, nursing, physiotherapy, paramedicine, or other health course.
It’s humbling to know that not only do I help the students that I see every day, but can also help those that I don’t see.
For those of you that have contributed to these views and downloads - THANK YOU! 🙏 ☺️

Well, as of now I am no longer a Senior Lecturer at
For over 10 years, Griffith has been my second home and second family. I have had some AMAZING experiences, teaching thousands of brilliant students, performing research with the best in the world, and working with colleagues that fast became close friends.
But, like with all things, we must move on!
As of Monday, I will be an Associate Professor of Medicine at and I CANNOT WAIT for this new chapter 🤗
If you are an ex-student of mine, thank you for the support ☺️ 🙏
To my future students, I can’t wait to meet you! 😝

I may be looking tired, old, and angry in these photos, but I had a blast last week delivering the plenary lecture to the Clinic Day.
I’m not a dentist and I know nothing about teeth, but they didn’t hold that against me 😅
I was fortunate to chat about the gorgeous trigeminal nerve and how it can sometimes be a bit of a bastard.

It was a great turn out at the Clinic Day Conference.
This morning I got to share the stage with my mate A/Prof. Alex Forrest AO to discuss tooth pain! Specifically, Acute Pulpitis!
I have one more presentation to deliver later in the day!

On Nov. 24th, I’m delivering a plenary to the QLD Clinic Day on…
‘Understanding Orofacial Pain’! 😣🦷
Here I show the nociceptive pathway and discrete areas of the brain 🧠 that contribute to the:
✅ Sensory
✅ Affective
✅ Cognitive
✅ Motivational
aspects of pain.

I had a great time chatting with the team at this morning about the biological correlates of pain - including the mechanisms behind how certain interventions, such as anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications, help to address certain types of pain.

Not bad for the last 28 days on YouTube! 😎

💔 Sad post warning 💔
This was my team when I first started my academic career. We worked so well together. Great friends.
Great colleagues.
Supportive and kind.
Unfortunately this team has been torn apart.
Last year, Grant was taken by cancer.
Yesterday, Amy was taken by cancer.
The world is not as bright today.
It is safe to say that I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for both Grant and Amy.
Amy was a true mentor.
Kind. Honest. Funny. Smart.
A spectacular mother and just stunning all round.
She gave me my first teaching opportunity, and batted for me when it came to getting a permanent position at the university.
A direct line can be drawn from my love of teaching straight to Amy.
She showed me the ropes.

Anyway. It’s hard to know what to do when these moments occurs.
Often the hardest moments are the best teaching moments.
From today, I will be more supportive. Provide more mentorship. And help facilitate opportunity for others.
I hope you all have a wonderful day.
- Dr Mike

Anniversary dinner time!! XOXO

12 years today!!
Going through some old photos of us from over a decade ago! 😅
My wife is awesome.
I would list all the things that I admire about her but Instagram only has a 2,200 character limit.

After delivering ~250 lectures over 10 years, I am about to deliver my last lecture at 😢

Thank you to everyone at Griffith for making it such a remarkable chapter in my life. 🙏

I may be 4 months late, but apparently Dr Matt Barton and I are #51 on the list of Queenslands Top 100 YouTube content creators 😂
At least I can say that Medical Education and fishing 🎣 is well represented in QLD!
