Do you find it difficult to say the numbers 13, 14 or 15 ? Do people think you have said 30, 40 or 50 instead? I have produced a recording of these two sets of numbers which are as follows:

thirteen (13) thirty (30)
fourteen (14) forty (40)
fifteen (15) fifty (50)
sixteen (16) sixty (60)
seventeen (17) seventy (70)
eighteen (18) eighty (80)
nineteen (19) ninety (90)

If you listen carefully, you will hear that you need to produce the Long Vowel e sound when pronouncing the 'teen' endings and the Short Vowel i sound when you are needing to pronounce the 'ty' endings.

I hope this will help you to pronounce your numbers clearly and correctly.

What a lovely way to start a day! I opened my emails this morning and read the following:
"Hi Sue,
I thought you might want to know that for the first time I had the courage to present about our Group in front of 100 people during a function that I attended on behalf of the WG. (I remembered your tips, and did not rush my words."

It is really important to slow your speech down. You need to give people your words, not throw your words at them !

It is also important to speak each word clearly and not mumble or join the words together - especially when you are speaking to a multicultural audience.

This will make sure you give people time to hear and to understand what you are saying.

When you speak quickly, people have to work really hard to understand what you are saying, especially over the phone !

Don't worry about taking time to speaking more slowly - You are worth listening to !

This post is for anyone who speaks English as a Second Language and who would benefit from listening to and learning how dates should be pronounced. As you can see, and more importantly, as you will hear, you need to take your time when pronouncing the date before you pronounce the month and the year. You will hear that in Australia, we pronounce the year with the word 'and' included which is different to the way years are pronounced in America. You can choose which way you can do this. The most important thing, is that you practice until you can say these dates clearly, confidently and correctly.

It is always a good idea to record your practice so that you can identify the individual sound or sounds that you need to focus on and correct.

I would like to congratulate those students who are prioritising the development of their English speech by speaking and listening to English at every opportunity. It is very difficult to stop speaking your first language and speak only in English whilst you are studying or working here in Australia, however, I encourage you to do so. It will not take you long to improve your clarity and fluency of your English speech and it will give you a huge advantage over others when you are looking to secure employment here in Australia or back at home.
