A beeswax wrap is reusable cling wrap. Use it to cover bowls, wrap sandwiches, and keep produce fresh. 🥒🥣

LETS MEET CHESTER THE BIODIGESTER ⭐️🍅

Chester is located behind the Veterinary Science Building and takes care of green waste on campus- how cool!

Chester uses a spinning blade to pulverise the waste and air flow to ensure the best conditions for making mulch. 🌳

Step 1: Food scraps from all around campus are collected. This includes both student bins (e.g. along Eastern Avenue) and from restaurants on campus. 🗑️

The waste is then hand sorted (you read that right- hand sorted!), so make sure to double check what’s going in the green bin. 🍔🍓🍌

Step 2: The waste is weighed and lifted to be fed to Chester 😋.

Step 3: The green waste gets fed to Chester. From when it goes in to when it comes out as mulch the cycle takes 7-10 days. 📅

Step 4: Chester digests. Chester only adds air flow and pulverisation 💨🔪. The green waste brings the bacteria, heat, and moisture 🦠🔥💧.

Step 5: Chester ensures equalibrium. If the waste gets too wet or too hot, Chester will turn on a fan to keep the levels within range with increased air flow. 🪭📈

Step 6: Harvest! The digested waste comes out of Chester as mulch- perfect for garden use 🌿.

The juice from the fan system gets taken away to be repurposed.

Step 7: The liquid from the fan system is collected and filtered. Liquid gold comes out of the bottom and it is used to water plants around the biodigester! 👑

Yes, we are looking for some Help! :)

We have a waste audit THIS FRIDAY. This will be an audit of our Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins across campus, hosted by Usyd Sustainability. Don't know what FOGO is? Don't worry, we will teach you!

Our goal is to see how often the bins are being used, and whether they are being used correctly. We will be getting hands-on and sorting out waste to achieve this.

This is a great learning opportunity, so come along and have some fun :)
