It was such a privilege to be part of the Mount Magnet Culture Camp the other weekend, where we got to camp on Badimia Country and take part in culture actives.

Our SHINE participants have been loving our amazing sessions with Regional Sounds ๐ŸŽผ๐ŸŽง๐ŸŽค

This week for our song writing session we explored using our 5 senses- sight, sound, taste, smell and touch for creative and expressive writing. We went for a mindfulness walk, where we observed our surroundings paying close attention to these senses ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿ‘…๐Ÿ‘‚

We ended up sitting at the rocks and enjoying the ocean, which is both a great grounding activity for mental wellbeing, as well as a source of inspiration for the participants writing ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿฅฐ

We can't wait for our next session - thank you Regional Sounds!
This week is National Child Protection Week, shining a light on the importance of children growing up safe and supported.

Children and young people thrive when they grow up safe, connected and supported in their family, community and culture. They have the right to grow up in environments that support them according to their needs, now and into the future.

Here at SHINE we are committed to creating a supportive environment for the young people we work with, to ensure they have a safe space to express their needs, and support in understanding their rights as young people.

By working together we can make sure every child in every community has a fair go.

A big Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's, Step-Dad's, Granddad's, Uncles, Brothers and male role models that support the amazing students we work with! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

We hope you have a very special day ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ

Shine is an award winning education program established in Geraldton, Western Australia.

Shine is a values based training model, targeted at โ€˜at riskโ€™ female youth aged between 11 and 16. These students are in danger of disengaging from the education system and society; negativity impacting their employment and life opportunities into the future. In addition, Shine develops confidence and wellbeing in the young female participants, through a structured program of experiential learning

Operating as usual

After our recent visit to Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella, the SHINE girls decided to share their experiences and we're beaming with pride.

From teaching little ones numbers and different animals to tweaking their communication styles for each unique child. The result? Boosted confidence and a richer understanding of interactions.

We can't wait to go back to see our little friends. ๐Ÿ’–

A tiny TED talker with a BIG message!

In 2021, SHINE welcomed a student whose resilience inspired us all. Despite facing traumatic experiences at home and enduring the weight of bullying at school, Emily showed immense growth. A particular challenge for her was the cruel doubts others cast upon her Aboriginal heritage. It left a mark on her year, reflected in her suspensions and an low school attendance.

However, Emily entered 2022 with renewed vigour and one clear goal in mind: to be part of the Shark Bay Eco-Leadership Camp. ๐ŸŒฟ

Join us next week to discover how Emily transformed her attendance and became a leader amongst her peers.

Want to know how we ignite the fire of empowerment in young women? Hereโ€™s the scoop:
๐Ÿ“š Education: Gift the tool of knowledge, and watch her conquer.
โค๏ธ Value: Everyone needs a cheer squad. Be the one that uplifts the women in your life.
๐Ÿ‘œ Support: A little nudge can propel her dream. Invest in businesses led by women.
๐Ÿค Mentorship: Got wisdom? Share it. Be the guiding star for a young soul.
๐Ÿ’ผ Skill Up: Give youth a guiding nudge towards programs that enhance their skills. Itโ€™s like gifting them wings!

Educating young women doesnโ€™t just change a life. It changes the world.

Behind the stunning Shark Bay views, SHINE's Eco-Leadership Camp has a deeper purpose. It's an opportunity for young leaders to learn from Elders and develop an understanding of the importance of Country.

Stick around for next week's post where you'll hear about Emily's journey with SHINE, and how she tackled challenges like bullying and rediscovered her cultural connection.

Thanks to Carole Whitby for her unwavering support and for sharing her connection to Country with us all.

๐ŸŒŸ With National Child Protection Week upon us, weโ€™re reflecting on the importance of strong starts and supportive environments.

A fair chance, resources, and opportunities can shape futures.

As we've seen, participation in education can lead to generational change. But for some, the path isn't straightforward.

What's happening in your area to ensure each child has their fair start? ๐Ÿค

This Indigenous language has just 20 fluent speakers left. This playgroup aims to save it 06/09/2023

Did you know? Many remote Indigenous communities lack basic resources like libraries or bookstores, making access to reading materials a challenge. But literacy is more than just access; it's about building context, comprehension, and understanding.

This Indigenous language has just 20 fluent speakers left. This playgroup aims to save it At a school near Alice Springs, children and their parents are learning the severely endangered language of Pertame. It's just one example of a national push to revitalise Indigenous languages for the next generation.

When women rise, we all rise!

After seeing the media today I guess the news is starting to get out ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ so I figure it's time to start sharing with my friends and family that I am running for Council in the 2023 City of Greater Geraldton Council elections.

I will need all the help I can get so please share with your networks and encourage people to vote ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป At this stage it seems I am the only female running for Council.

As most of you should already know, I am embedded and passionate about people and community, and importantly, ensuring we have equity in our regions. I have a clear intent to work collaboratively with our community to address our challenges and amplify opportunities.

I will be campaigning formally when nominations open on August 31. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

To be the listening ear for the whispers of dreams, hopes, and fears is a blessing and a privilege.

Recently a beautiful moment of synchronicity unfolded between myself and our incredible SHINE facilitator, Jodie. Just as I shared this snapshot from our previous SHINE camp, my phone buzzed with a call from Jodie. "Can you believe it?" she exclaimed, "I JUST set that same picture as my screensaver!"

We burst into excited chatter, marvelling at our perfect synchronicity (great minds think a like!) and eagerly discussing our anticipation for the camp. Our hearts swelled thinking of how the girls have been pouring their efforts and passion into preparing for this experience.

This was more than just a coincidental chat; it was a moment that brought everything full circle, emphasizing that when you're in tune with a mission, everything aligns. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’–

๐ŸŒˆ Saying our farewells at SHINE is never a dull affair!

๐ŸŒŸ The Year 9 girls brought life, colour, and their signature SHINE energy to bid Mr. Hunt a spirited goodbye. We doused him in his favourite colours!

As Mr. Hunt embarks on his next chapter in GERMANY! We remember and cherish the moments, the mentorship, and the magic he brought into our lives. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

His legacy? It's painted on our hearts and in the vibrant streaks of colour in these pictures. Go on, chase those dreams, Mr. Hunt, and always know your SHINE family is cheering you on! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒˆ

Last week our SHINE facility at Champion Bay Senior High School was graced by familiar friends from the National Indigenous Australian Agency (NIAA). Thank you to Gaylene - Assistant Director, Naomi - Advisor and Tahlia Phillips - Engagement Support, for taking the time to visit us at SHINE.

A stroll down memory lane reminds us that they believed in SHINE's vision back in 2010. SHINE's partnership with the NIAA has allowed us to continue program works to improve the socioeconomic Closing the Gap education targets.

During the visit our dedicated facilitator, K**a, illuminated the essence of SHINE, emphasising our commitment to safe spaces and advocacy. And what was truly moving? Listening to the dreams, aspirations, and challenges voiced by the SHINE girls.

Tahlia, the newest member of NIAA, resonated with the girls' journey, emphasising that sometimes, life's path is uncertain, and that's okay. Heartfelt thanks to Tahlia for her candid reflections, and to Gaylene and Naomi for their enduring partnership.

Together, we continue to cast rays of hope and empowerment. ๐ŸŒผ

Empowering Resilient Young Women๐ŸŒฑ

School camps are more than just adventures; they are transformative experiences that shape young minds and hearts. Let's dive deeper into one of the essential aspects of school camps: Resilience Building.

School camps challenge students to step outside their comfort zones and overcome obstacles. Through these experiences, they develop resilience, learning that setbacks are opportunities for growth. ๐ŸŒฟ

During our Eco-Leadership Camp, the SHINE girls we support have the chance to encounter various challenges, from navigating the wilderness to engaging in teamwork and leadership tasks. These experiences might be outside their usual routines, but they are precisely what foster resilience and inner strength. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’ช

When faced with obstacles, they learn to adapt, problem-solve, and embrace the power of perseverance. It's in these moments that they discover their true capabilities and understand that even in the face of difficulty, they can rise, thrive, and achieve great things. ๐ŸŒŸ

By supporting SHINE and our Eco-Leadership Camp, you contribute to creating a safe space where these girls can grow, learn, and develop the resilience they need to face life's challenges head-on. Your donation goes directly towards providing accommodation, transport, insurance, supervisors, food, toiletries, safety items, and activities, removing financial barriers and empowering these incredible girls to reach new heights. ๐ŸŒˆ

โœจ Be part of the journey of resilience and empowerment. Donate today to make a difference in the lives of these young girls:

SHINE Inspire Achieve Belong is not just an education program โ€“ it's a movement. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ช

Through our complementary education programs, we create a safe space for young girls. We advocate for and support every student who walks through our doors. In fostering community engagement, we provide opportunities for girls to develop life skills while enhancing their sense of belonging.

Our teachings go beyond the confines of classrooms and workplaces. We educate on health, wellbeing, emotional safety, and respectful relationships, all essential for setting up our future leaders to thrive.

๐ŸŒŸ Our first day at Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella! ๐ŸŒˆ

We're bursting with excitement to share the incredible success of our first visit to the Kindy room at Wonthella Early Learning! ๐Ÿ˜ Our girls were simply unstoppable, embracing every moment with enthusiasm and leadership. From heartwarming interactions with little friends to exploring the dress-up corner and engaging in outdoor play, their joyful engagement was beyond words! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’•

With beaming smiles, the SHINE girls will provide the Kindy class with lessons on culture, art, environment, self-love, and safety. This empowering collaboration allows them to work closely with the childcare team, observe the classroom dynamics, and interact with both students and staff alike. ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿค

Through this journey, the SHINE girls are immersed in the early learning centre's nurturing environment, potentially inspiring future roles in childcare. ๐Ÿซ๐ŸŒฑ

๐ŸŒŸ Celebrating the Power of Collaboration and Creativity at SHINE ๐ŸŒŸ

Before finishing up, Courtney together with the girls embarked on an artistic journey, using their hands to bring their inner strength and creativity to life. The result? A collaborative masterpiece that captures the essence of their shared experiences.
This artwork represents the strong bonds and safe space that Courtney cultivated throughout her time at SHINE. It symbolises the empowering environment she fostered, where girls could freely express themselves, explore their strengths, and embrace their unique creativity.

Within this artwork each handprint represents a story, a voice, and a journey, intricately woven together to form a powerful testament to their collective resilience and growth.

We are proud of the girls and their artistic creation, a visual representation of the incredible journey they have embarked upon. It is a reminder of the lasting impact that dedicated facilitators like Courtney have on the lives of these young girls.

๐ŸŽ‰ Celebrating Special Moments ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Today, K**a visited the SHINE office with a few of the girls to load up the Variety bags to take back to Champion Bay Senior High School. ๐ŸŽ’โœจ

It was a special day for one of the girls today as she was celebrating her thirteenth birthday! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿฅณ She had the chance to pick something special for herself from the Variety bags, making her day even brighter.

Empowering girls means celebrating their individuality, uplifting them on special occasions, and showing them that they are valued and loved. Together, we create a community that embraces every milestone, every achievement, and every dream.

Happy Birthday beautiful, and a huge thank you to Variety Childrens Charity, and all of the community members who donated these items. You are bringing smiles to our SHINE community! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽ

๐ŸŒŸ Term 2 Highlight: INSPIRE ๐ŸŒŸ

In Term 2, our Year 9 & 10 program focused on the power of INSPIRE - to be inspirational and inspire others with the incredible work our SHINE students develop.

Throughout the term, the students learned valuable life lessons that will shape their journey to success:

โœจ Never Give Up: Persevere through challenges, knowing that every setback is an opportunity to grow stronger. ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŒŸ NAIDOC Week at Rangeway Primary! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽจ

Our SHIMMER students commemorated NAIDOC Week with great enthusiasm and creativity! This year's theme, "For our Elders," inspired the girls to express their respect and appreciation for the special elders in their lives. Each SHIMMER girl painted 1 or 2 beautiful artworks, accompanied by heartfelt explanations of why their chosen elder is so important to them and the significance behind their paintings. We are incredibly proud of the girls for reflecting on the important people in their lives and honouring their culture.

These thoughtful and meaningful paintings, along with the heartfelt write-ups, will be proudly displayed at our upcoming family day next term. Afterward, we will present the artworks to our special elders as a token of gratitude and love.

To further embrace the NAIDOC theme, the girls also indulged in a delightful pizza party and captured some fun-filled photos to celebrate the end of Term. It's beautiful to witness the joy and unity within our SHIMMER community as we come together to celebrate our culture and each other.
