This work is hard.
Not every day, and not every moment. But sometimes? Really bloody hard.
I think we need to give ourselves permission to say that without immediately trying to turn it into gratitude, positivity, or a lesson about resilience.
Sometimes youâre allowed to just think, âFaarrrrr out, this is hard.â
Finding something hard doesnât mean youâre bad at it, and it doesnât mean youâve chosen the wrong career. Far from it.
We are human beings doing deeply human work - OF COURSE there are going to be days when our own stuff collides with the emotional load of caring for everybody else.
The important part, I think, is allowing ourselves to feel the hard without getting stuck in the hard.
Cry with your teacher bestie.
Sit in your car for five minutes.
Ask for help.
Debrief.
Take something off your plate.
Find the people who remind you that you donât have to have it all together.
And then, when you can, find your way through.
We donât need to pretend this work isnât hard, we just need to stop believing weâre supposed to carry the hard parts alone.
Save this for the next time you need this reminder đ©·

Children pushing back against our boundaries can feel uncomfortable for us, but it doesnât mean the boundary is wrong or that it âhasnât worked.â
Itâs also important for me to add that we can understand, acknowledge and support how a child feels about a boundary without needing to change it.
Our job isnât to make them happy about the boundary - our job is to make space for their feelings while still holding the line: âI know you really wanted to. Itâs okay to be upset, the answer is still no.â
We can accept the feeling without changing the boundary đ©·

Iâve got a big call to make.
Proactive measures are *always* going to reign supreme.
Thatâs not the big call. This one is đđ»
I solidly believe that the more time we spend on those tier 1 supports, the less children weâd be labelling as âtier 3.â
Also, while weâre at it, can we also stop calling them âtier 3 childrenâ? Thatâs a bit ick.

Working with children is deeply human work.
To get through it - the good, the bad, and the ugly - we need our people.
BUT
They need to be the right kind of people.
The idea of Marigolds from Cult of Pedagogy has been hugely impactful across my teaching career and Iâm absolutely convinced that we all need Marigolds.
Without them, I likely would have walked away from teaching after my first year.
Want to hear more about the importance of Marigolds and why I believe theyâre the answer to the messiness weâre feeling in education right now?
