We are thrilled to have received a Creative Development Grant from Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to present this exhibition of new drawings

Welcome to Bread of Bone, an exhibition of new visual artworks by established WA artists Erin Coates, Ross Potter, Andy Quilty, Anna Louise Richardson, and Ric Spencer, to be exhibited in March 2023, at the highly regarded Holmes à Court Gallery in West Perth.

The concept for this project was initially developed by Fremantle based artist Ross Potter, in response to the changing perspectives of becoming a father and recent food shortages due to the pandemic, climate change induced flooding and war in Ukraine. Potter was also interested in social media trends leading to increased awareness of emerging differences of attitudes, prioritisation of shopping, growing food, sharing with neighbours, and altering diets.

Potter, acutely feeling the impacts of changing food security, conscious of food-based cultural awareness, and having an inquisitive five-year-old, invited Coates, Quilty, Richardson, and Spencer to bring these thoughts to the fore: What do we do when we can’t buy food? How do we approach children about slaughtering and preparing animals to eat? How do we promote cultural awareness and acceptance when others eat foods our ancestors deemed ‘inedible’?

Bread of Bone will focus on each artist’s exploration and perspective of food through the staple technique of drawing, creating a though-provoking exhibition of high calibre, while exploring their own thoughts and feelings toward modern interpretations of grinding bones to make bread...
