Classrooms are more complex than ever — but teachers haven't been given more time to prepare lessons in decades.

Something has to change. Teachers are pushing for two hours of additional preparation time each week — and we need your help.

Congratulations to the Sydney Peace Foundation’s 2026 Sydney Peace Prize recipient: human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson.

Robinson said she hoped the award “will inspire young women from our public education system, and from rural and regional areas like where I come from, about what’s possible for them — because you can’t be what you can’t see”.

Federation is a Partner in Peace with the Sydney Peace Foundation and has a long history of supporting international peace and justice. Federation upholds that all wars are fought against children.

The Education Minister has been urged to slam the brakes on a reckless departmental shake up of school attendance policy that would see 113 specialist Home School Liaison Officer positions replaced by clerks with no experience in getting kids to school. NSW Teachers Federation Deputy President Natasha Watt said the decision was short-sighted and ill-informed. Read the media release via the link in the comments.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Saturday 21 March will draw attention to the need for everyone to play a part in challenging and addressing both individual and systemic racism.

Race Discrimination Commissioner, Giridharan Sivaraman states that ‘Real change starts with listening. As we approach the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) on 21 March 2026, it’s vital that we listen to the stories of First Peoples,’ as well as centre anti-racism action on lived experiences.

Federation believes that if we are going to effect real change, it is time for us all to learn how to action an end to racism!

While our schools and Tafe colleges celebrate Harmony Week (16-22 March), Federation urges teachers to engage in meaningful anti-racism education, alongside celebrating diversity, respect for culture and the power of inclusion.
