Teach how to think rather than what to think…

Last week the latest NAPLAN results were released. The headlines were predictable. Two-thirds of Australian students met the national benchmark. One-third did not. Immediately the debate began. More funding. More teachers. More tutoring. More testing. Truth be told... I think we're asking the wrong....

What an inspiring day in Casey!

This morning I had the privilege of speaking with the Year 11 & 12 students at Foundation Learning, where we explored what it means to live with purpose, stay motivated and, most importantly, understand the value of volunteering and giving back to our community.

One of the messages I shared was simple: we don’t find purpose by asking what the world owes us - we find it by asking what we can contribute. When we serve others, we build stronger communities and a greater sense of belonging.

This afternoon I joined the NAIDOC Week celebrations at Hampton Park Secondary College, celebrating the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It was wonderful to see students engaging with culture, learning from one another and embracing the spirit of respect, connection and community.

Days like today remind me why I care so deeply about Belonging in Casey. Strong communities aren’t built by governments alone - they’re built by people who show up, volunteer, learn from one another and choose to make a positive difference.

If you’re passionate about building a safer, stronger and more connected Casey, I’d love to hear from you.

Young people today are growing up in a world where they are constantly observed, evaluated, and compared. Yet many still struggle to feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued.

At the CQ Cultural Education Institute, we believe belonging is not a by-product of education. It is a foundation for learning, wellbeing, and social cohesion.

This week's Truth Be Told article by Dya Singh and Dr Jamel Kaur Singh invites us to rethink what young people need most. Perhaps the answer isn't more surveillance or scrutiny, but stronger relationships, deeper understanding, and communities where every young person knows they belong.

Recently, I attended a Filipino community cook-up lunch. It was warm, generous, noisy in the best possible way, and exactly the sort of community gathering Australia needs more of. Food was shared, stories were told, aunties hovered, and for a few hours people were simply together. But the most powe...
