Plagiarism is one of the curses that come with access to limitless knowledge, thanks to the Internet. Though existent before the internet, plagiarism is significantly gone higher in the past decade. Plagiarism is actually becoming a serious issue in college and even in workplaces.
So what actually counts as plagiarism, and how can it be avoided?
WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?
Plagiarism can be simply defined as the theft of someone's ideas and using those as if they were yours. Though plagiarism is associated more with school essays and workplace codes even on social media it can be found in terms of art tracing and prompt stealing. That includes-
*Using the other author's words and phrases without quoting them or taking permission from them.
*Rephrasing the sentences of other sources and using them as their own ideas is usually known as "Paraphrasing".
*Using the artist's drawings, pictures, songs, or other media without giving them proper credits.
*Copying or tracing someone else's art or ideas.
WHY IS PLAGIARISM AN ISSUE?
Plagiarism is significantly gone higher in the last decade as the internet allowed such massive stores of knowledge and information at the convenience of the fingertips allowing people to either copy-paste or paraphrase any idea they wish to. It will enable people to use other peoples' ideas and pass them as their own them robbing them of their own unique ideas and take on things and depriving the world of their fresh and original views on something.
Thus educational institutes are enforcing stern rules regarding plagiarism, whether it is accidental or intentional can result in failing the classes or expulsion. Plagiarism also falls under a type of "copyright infringement"(a law that protects the right of a creator and their original ideas) and is actually ILLEGAL, and punishment can range from fine to 'null and void' of the copy to being kicked out of the institute or workplace in extreme cases.
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM?
It is fairly easy to dodge plagiarism by following the tips given below:
*Quote the words using quotation marks whenever using other people's statements or words, and use a proper citation.
*Avoid paraphrasing and copying from other sources.
