Glides has two merits. Here's what they mean.
1. Face in water
Your swimmer needs to comfortably and consistently blow bubbles with their face in the water while walking, whole face and ears submerged, steady stream of bubbles the whole way. Until this one's ticked off, they won't move on to gliding or kicking.
2. Backstroke kicking with a board
Kicking on their back from one side of the lane to the other, starting and finishing independently.
Why it matters: rushing a child onto a new skill before they're ready usually means it takes longer to nail it down the track. These merits make sure the foundations are solid first.
That's a State Swim Kid, one skill at a time.
