DIRRANBANDI BOIL WATER ALERT CANCELLED

Following a malfunction at the Dirranbandi Water Treatment Plant at 8pm on Saturday 15 August 2026, Council acted immediately to protect the health and safety of the Dirranbandi community by instigating a Boil Water Alert, sent an Emergency Alert to all mobile phones in the area, provided updates on the Emergency Dashboard and provided free bottled water from the Dirranbandi Depot.

Council has flushed the mains water reticulation system and undertaken NATA-accredited and in-house water testing to ensure water from the Plant is in line with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

All water testing showed negative results for coliform bacteria and were provided to Queensland Health and the water regulator, who advised that the Boil Water Alert can now be cancelled, meaning it is safe for human consumption (drinking water).

Council has now brought forward the scheduled full upgrade of the Dirranbandi Water Treatment Plant’s electrical switchboard, automated systems and controllers that was planned from 24-28 August.

As Dirranbandi’s water supply will be 100% bore water and will not have the cooling effect of blending in chlorinated river water, we ask that all residents take care as the natural heat of the water will be elevated.

The 100% bore water should be cooler at this time of year, however if the bore water is too hot for residents, they should undertake the following practices:
• Switch off the hot water system, as it will create a cooling effect by allowing water to cool as it comes through the hot water system and use the cold water tap for hot water;
• Fill large containers and/or a secondary sink to allow the water to cool, which will provide a readily available source of cool drinking water;
• Fill the bathtub in the morning, so it will be cooled for baths in the evening;
• Take care when using the bore water direct from the cold-water outlet.

We will advise once the Dirranbandi Water Treatment Plant has been shifted back to its normal blended bore/river water supply.

If you have any questions in relation to this matter, please do not hesitate to contact Council on 4620 8888.

Our Year 9/10 class visited Moonrocks in St George today. Students were able to see and hear about the sustainable, security and ethical factors involved in growing and packaging Moonrocks onions and garlic as part of our school’s Food Technologies course. The visit also provided links to student learning in Ag Studies and Certificate studies. A brilliant experience.

Thank you Moonrocks for having us, in particular Lynda Myburgh and David Moon.
