All children and young people experience big emotions which can be hard for adults to manage and understand. The most important thing to remember is that we cannot help them to calm down if we are in a distressed/angry/frustrated/anxious place ourselves.
That's why point 1 is first. Take the time to calm yourself: breathe, walk away if you can, try not to speak until you know what you're going to say is helpful.
We need to role model how to do this so that children learn to do it for themselves 🌈

An effective way of managing our emotions is by noticing what we feel, acknowledging it and giving words to it - as Dr Dan Siegel says 'name it to tame it'.

How Anger, Tantrums, and Meltdowns Protect Your Child 25/07/2021

"What children need most during challenging times is patience, warmth and love from the adults around them."
Mona Delahooke, Ph.D. explores children's distressed behaviours and why we should be curious as to what they could be communicating:

How Anger, Tantrums, and Meltdowns Protect Your Child Meltdowns and tantrums are not purposeful misbehavior. In the moment, a child needs soothing, not lecturing, consequences or punishment.
