Canberra Girls Grammar School Alumni Carrying the torch of a 100-year spirit of fiercely independent women. We aim to respond to questions and feedback as soon as possible within this timeframe.

The Canberra Girls Grammar School (CGGS) Grammarians’ Association (GA) was formed as the Old Girls’ Union in 1931, just five years after the founding of the School. Six past students comprised the Committee under the presidency of Diana Prance (Eddison, 1931). Since that time, the GA has responded to the changing fortunes of Canberra and the development of the School. The GA exists to promote the

interests of past students, the ties between them and the School, and the interests of the School in the community. Generations of voices all warming up at once! 🎶

With our Centenary Gala Concert just seven days away, our talented Grammarians have been travelling from near and far to be alongside our students. It is profoundly moving to see generations of our community sharing the same stage, and these past few weeks have been full of exactly those moments.

This week’s concert rehearsal brought together our choristers from the Junior and Senior School campuses. Voices that usually fill separate rooms found their harmony in one, a reminder of just how much this concert has been building towards. Grammarian Sarahlouise Owens (Class of 1983) filled the hall with energy and joy as she sang Elena Kats-Chernin's Women's Memorial, 'To Hold the World'. It was a memorable moment for the students gathered around her, as it became only the second time this piece has ever been performed.

At CGGS, girls in STEM isn’t a new conversation. It’s a legacy.🧪

To celebrate National Science Week, this week’s Heritage to Horizon honours the fiercely independent women who championed science and STEM subjects for generations of CGGS students.

In the early days of the School, there was no proper laboratory for students to call their own, so they ran experiments around a battered wooden table with one microscope between them. To them, there were no limits to their potential, and no obstacles.

In 1964, an environment designed for our student’s passion took shape. CGGS received the first grant for science facilities in the ACT given to an independent school, and that same year a group travelled to a science exhibition at the NSW State Library to witness STEM activities outside the classroom. In 1984, a Year 12 team won the National Chemistry Week Titration competition, showcasing the strength of the School’s curriculum at the time. And in 2012, our award-winning Science Wing was opened by Nobel laureate Professor Brian Schmidt, creating dynamic multi-level spaces for future-focused STEM education. Chair of the School Board in 2012, Belinda Moss OAM, said of the Science Wing: "Science teachers came from far and wide, from other states to see it and take ideas back to their schools.”

Now, year-on-year an increasing number of CGGS students choose to pursue multiple science subjects—a testament to those who preceded them, and who believed that anything was possible.

Return to CGGS this October for a reunion 100 years in the making!🌷

As part of the CGGS Centenary festivities, join fellow Grammarians for an afternoon of connection, reflection and community at the annual 'Super Saturday' Canberra Alumni Reunion.

At our biggest reunion of the year, share a joyful Chapel service, retrace old footsteps on a ‘memory lane’ tour of the Senior School campus and gather in the newly renovated Gabriel Centre, relaxing in the sunshine of the Quad for a Garden-party themed afternoon tea, followed by an optional historical tour of the Boarding House.

Whether you are attending with your year group, a group of friends or on your own, you will be warmly welcomed back to campus and bound to see familiar faces.

It was heartwarming to welcome over 40 cherished former staff to the Emeritus Staff Luncheon today! 💖

Held at the School’s lakeside campus, Yhuuramulum, past educators, leaders and professional staff of CGGS reconnected with colleagues and friends, shared memories and reflected on their role in shaping the CGGS story across generations. The day offered precious links to the School’s past, with tales and anecdotes recounted joyfully throughout the afternoon.

Guests also recorded their hopes for the future of CGGS, which will join those of current students and staff in the Centenary Time Capsule, to be opened on the School’s 150th Anniversary in 2076.

This much-loved tradition honoured the lasting contribution of our former staff and held special significance in our Centenary year as we reflected on a century of community, spirit and shared history.

On Saturday 3 October, join us at the ‘Super Saturday’ Canberra Alumni Reunion. Our biggest and brightest annual Grammarian event features tours of the Senior School, Boarding House and afternoon tea. Three decades on, return to CGGS, reconnect with old friends and revisit the places that shaped your school years.

So, how much has our School uniform changed over the past 100 years?

For our next edition of Heritage to Horizon, we take a look at our iconic uniform as it evolved and what has remained throughout our history. Scroll through and you’ll see it unfold, decade by decade, from the 1920s all the way to the early 2000s. A century of girls, each in the uniform of her time.

Back then, the seasons were written into the uniform—straw boaters in summer, berets in winter, gloves and hats on the moment students stepped outside the gates.

The main Schoolhouse faced away from the sun and had no real heating, so layering up in the winter was essential, not fashion. As one student recalled: “I have vivid memories of winter, wearing as many layers of my school uniform as possible, and then putting a tracksuit over the whole lot. And we still froze!”

Now in 2026 the uniform reflects our contemporary context while honouring our heritage.

Bridget Shaw AM (Class of 1974) joins a growing list of distinguished Grammarians, having been recognised at the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for significant service to physiotherapy, clinical training and advanced practice leadership.

Over the past four decades, Bridget has established herself as one of Australia’s most respected physiotherapy leaders. Her contributions have spanned clinical care, education, research, health management and advocacy, shaping and expanding the role of physiotherapy within the healthcare system. Through leadership positions with the Australian Physiotherapy Association, clinical and advanced practice roles, Bridget has been instrumental in driving innovation and excellence across the profession.

Bridget’s connection to CGGS runs deep—her mother, Jennifer Shaw, served as both Deputy Headmistress and later Headmistress of the School from 1967–79.

Congratulations to Bridget on this well-deserved honour! Her dedication and leadership is a powerful example of the impact Grammarians have in shaping a hope-filled future.

Forty years later–the memories, friendships and connections remain. Join your cohort to celebrate this special milestone across two wonderful events.

On Saturday 3 October, join us at the ‘Super Saturday’ Canberra Alumni Reunion. Spend an afternoon reconnecting with friends and reflecting on the memories since your time at CGGS.
