This NAIDOC Week, we're celebrating the achievements of Lawson Connor, a graduate of the IAHA National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Academy in the ACT, whose journey is a powerful example of what can happen when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people are supported to pursue their aspirations.

Now working as an Emergency Call Taker with the ACT Ambulance Service while studying to become a paramedic, Lawson brings more than technical skills to his role. He brings compassion, cultural strength and the practice of Dadirri (deep listening) to support people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

At IAHA, we know that growing a strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce starts long before graduation. It begins by creating culturally safe pathways that empower young people to explore careers, build confidence and see themselves as future leaders in health and wellbeing.

Congratulations, Lawson. We're proud to have been part of your journey and can't wait to see the impact you'll continue to make.

IAHA Group Training is proud to be supporting the participants in NT Health’s Aboriginal Enrolled Nurse Training program – which aims to grow the next generation of the Territories Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses.

Of the seven participants, five of them are graduates of the IAHA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Academy – successfully completing their Year 12 studies whilst also attaining a Cert III in Allied Health Assistance.

IAHA Group Training will support the program participants through culturally safe and responsive supports and mentoring services.

IAHA Academy Graduate and program participant Davina Perry, 18, from the Tiwi Islands said, "I hope to get more experience and knowledge to become a Registered Nurse and give back to the community. I encourage family to get into healthcare."

IAHA Group Training look forward to supporting participants on their nursing journey.

IAHA Group Training is proud to welcome 55 new school-based trainees who have officially commenced their journey with us in 2026!

Trainees will undertake a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance and being careers in the health sector.

As a Group Training Organisation we support traineeships that combine meaningful on-the-job learning with strong, holistic wraparound support.

Congratulations to all the school-based trainees who completed the IAHA National Academy program last night on the traditional lands of the Dharug People.

IAHA Group Training is proud to partner with IAHA’s National Academy Program and TAFE NSW to support increased engagement, retention, and successful completion of Year 12 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students in the Greater Western Sydney Region—with the achievement of completing a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance through a school based traineeship.

Lawson Connor is a proud Wiradjuri man from Canberra and one of the 2024 graduates of the IAHA National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Academy (ACT Program).

At just 17, Lawson has achieved incredible milestones—completing a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance through IAHA Group Training in collaboration with the Canberra Institute of Technology, all while balancing Year 11 and 12 studies, work placements at Canberra Hospital, and his role as School Vice-Captain.

Lawson’s passion for healthcare is deeply personal and cultural. Diagnosed with epilepsy at age three, he developed an early appreciation for the lifesaving work of health professionals. His experience through IAHA Group Training helped him discover his calling and the confidence to lead.

In 2024, Lawson was honoured as the ACT School-Based Trainee of the Year and went on to represent the ACT at the Australian Training Awards. In 2025, he began a new chapter—joining the ACT Ambulance Service as a Triple Zero (000) Emergency Call Taker while studying a Bachelor of Paramedicine at Australian Catholic University.
