🌿 Preparing for a children’s art workshop in Darwin

The studio was ready this morning for another Mystery Plants & Trees creative workshop at UNTiTLED gallery+studio in Coconut Grove.

Before each session, I carefully prepare the environment and materials so children can arrive to a calm, inviting creative space.

My workshops are Montessori-informed and artist-led. Rather than asking every child to make the same finished artwork, we begin with observation, materials and carefully presented techniques. Children can then experiment, imagine and develop their own ideas.

Today’s invitation brought together nature observation, drawing, colour, line, pattern and storytelling — with natural objects from the Darwin environment providing starting points for creative exploration. 🌳🎨

It is wonderful to see each child respond differently. There is no single “right” artwork to make — each finished piece reflects the individual child’s observations, decisions and imagination.

🌿 Art workshops for children in Darwin

At Maria Grujicic Studio, children are invited to **observe, experiment, imagine and create** through small-group, artist-led workshops inspired by nature, storytelling and the world around us.

My workshops are **place-based and Montessori-informed**, with materials and techniques introduced step by step before children are encouraged to explore their own ideas.

There is no single finished artwork to copy. Each child can respond differently, make creative choices and develop an artwork that is uniquely their own. 🎨

Workshops may include drawing, watercolour, natural materials, colour exploration, sensory art, storytelling and three-dimensional making.

A little glimpse inside Mystery Plants & Trees: Adventures in the Ludmilla Bushblock: my Darwin place-based picture book inspired by the plants, pathways and possibilities of the Ludmilla Bushland.

In this little film, I’m at The Bookshop Darwin, bringing some of the pages and movements from the story to life.

🌿 Every child creates differently.

One of the things I value most as an artist and educator is giving children time to observe, think, experiment and develop their own ideas.

Rather than asking everyone to produce the same artwork, I provide carefully prepared materials, demonstrations and individual guidance that respond to each child's interests and stage of development. Children are encouraged to investigate colour, line, pattern and shape while gradually building confidence in their own creative decisions.

Watching children become deeply engaged in the creative process—and seeing their ideas evolve over time—is one of the most rewarding parts of these workshops.

Darwin Children's Art Workshops | Observing Growth Through Art 16/08/2026

🌿 How do children grow through art?

In my latest Studio Notes article, I reflect on a recent Darwin children’s art workshop at UNTiTLED gallery+studio and what I observed as children returned for another artist-led creative experience.

Through watercolour, drawing, Montessori-informed materials, realistic critters, puppets and carefully prepared visual resources, children explored line, colour, shape, pattern and imaginative storytelling.

What excited me most was seeing returning participants begin to transfer earlier learning into their own artwork. They showed sustained concentration, made increasingly intentional creative choices and developed original ideas rather than producing identical outcomes.

My role as an artist-educator is to observe, ask questions, demonstrate selectively and offer guidance that responds to each child’s interests—while leaving space for their own visual language to emerge.

Wearable art, made from my original artwork and inspired by Darwin.

I’ve been bringing more of my studio practice into clothing and everyday pieces: art you can wear, carry and take with you.

🌿 Artist-led children’s art workshops in Darwin

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is observing how each child responds differently to the same creative invitation.

During this workshop at UNTiTLED gallery+studio, children explored drawing, watercolour, Montessori Metal Insets, line, colour, pattern and nature-inspired materials. I offered demonstrations, questions and individual guidance, while leaving space for each participant to make their own choices and develop their own ideas.

The workshops are carefully structured, but they are not based on everyone producing the same artwork. Children are encouraged to observe closely, experiment with materials, reflect on what they discover and gradually build their own visual language.

It has been especially exciting to see returning participants applying previous learning with greater concentration, confidence and independence.
