The passing of Professor Richard Scolyer AO is profoundly heartbreaking for our family, especially after meeting him in both Canberra and Darwin during the Australian of the Year events. His brilliance, kindness, and extraordinary courage in facing glioblastoma were deeply inspiring. Richard was not only a world‑leading doctor but also a genuinely humble and good person whose strength touched everyone around him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Katie and their children Emily, Matthew, and Lucy as they navigate this unimaginable loss. His legacy as a scientist, father, husband, and remarkable Australian will continue to shine.
Richard shared his journey with glioblastoma on his social media page, My Uncertain Path, and in his memoir Brainstorm. In Brainstorm, he mentioned Peter, our head tutor, recognising his academic achievements including medalling at the International Brain Bee Olympiad and beginning medical studies at age 15 as well as his commitment to community advocacy.
In 2025, Peter and his sister, Eva, raised funds for the Melanoma Institute in support of Richard’s work by selling their grandmother’s Indonesian snacks at Nightcliff Foreshore and Cullen Bay.
RIP Prof. Richard Scolyer AO.
