BIOGRAPHY

Living and breathing by her self-created ethos, Emma Elizabeth Coffey is turning heads with her interior designing and styling prowess. Born in Sydney, Emma Elizabeth spent the majority of her youth in the USA and UK, relocating to Brisbane as a young teen. Emma Elizabeth knew that in order to get ahead in style and design she would have to stand up while everyone else was sitting down

- and hence relocated to Milan and completed a degree in Commercial Interior Design (Scenografia) from the acclaimed Istituto Europeo di Design (IED). It is the montage of art, design, fashion and innovation that appeals most to Emma Elizabeth. This potent fusion is what inspires her lifestyle interior design and creations. Drawing from years of travel and study abroad, Emma's work is heavily European influenced, yet her artistic cultural reach extends as far as the likes of her favourite artist, Tokyo based Yayoi Kusama. Uncomplicated yet uncompromising in form, Emma Elizabeth Designs featured at Zona Tortona during Milan Design Week 2006. Emma Elizabeth Designs were on show alongside the likes of Swarovski, Tom Dixon, Casa Armani and many other leading international names. However, the defining moment in Emma's trajectory, thus far, was when the Philippe Starck Network requested to view her work --The penultimate validation of her design and styling prowess-- an overwhelming accolade. Emma Elizabeth is now based in Sydney as a freelance commercial stylist & designer, transitioning between, interior design (residentail & commercial), art direction, set design, styling, installation, exhibitions, product design.....and loves every minute of her creative cross disciplinary approach.

Jia CURATED is the Bali brain child of Budiman Ong, Rudi Winata & Yang Yang Hartono, expressing all their passion for craft, design & culture within one show.

Together, they curate experiences that encourage meaningful connections and cultural exchange. Of which they achieved, I had so many great conversations this week with people from all over the world; Serbia, Italy, Colombia, New Zealand, U.K, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea etc……

You can see the importance this fabulous trio put on this show, in order to create a moment that supports creativity while fostering a deeper, more inclusive dialogue within the local & global design community. Design shown within nature & not within hotels, casinos and badly carpeted trade fair halls, elevates the industries ideas, pieces, people & places.

I can’t wait to be part of the show next year, where I will be curating a moment for 2027, that celebrates the theme of “Emotion in Motion” 🙏

I found this week my old microphone flag, the pro one we had made post my make shift cardboard gaffer tape one. Before everyone had a camera in their pocket, before “content creator” was a job title & before video became the language of the internet, there was The Design Vlog that I co-created with my agent/producer Joclyn McCahon

The idea was simple, I wanted people to see the design world the way I saw it. To meet the people behind the work, hear their stories & understand the thinking, craft & culture that makes design matter.

Joc & I, we took the idea out into the world and heard no more times than I can remember.

“No one understands video.”
“Video will never be relevant.”
“It’ll never work.”
“People won’t watch this online.”

There were no easy upload portals. No filming, editing and posting from your phone. We physically took footage to upload facilities just to get it online & sent to be edited as we were racing to get videos up in semi real time.

It was clunky. It was expensive. It was completely ahead of its time, yet there were two people who believed in it Costas Voyatzis from Yatzer & the Japanese 🇯🇵 we were syndicated on a tv network. Miki Koike do you remember the name of the show ..? I only have the DVD & no idea where that is.

Looking back at these old interview grabs, now makes me incredibly nostalgic & wowzies it was a blast. No script, no time slots for interviews, it was totally gorilla. We weren’t making video because we wanted to be seen. We were making video because there were stories we wanted people to see.

Maybe that’s the part I miss most.

Video won. It became bigger than we could have imagined. But somewhere along the way, so much of it became about being visible rather than having something to say. I still believe in the version we were fighting for all those years ago:

Less “look at me, look at me walking through a shot.”
More “look at this, understand this & inspire further thinking.”
