Parenting, most of us parent the way we were parented. However parenting in my era was about providing food, shelter and survival. Some called it hard love but I understood my parents childhood journey and trauma which led to them not being emotionally available because they had no parents to role model the same. As a parent I was reflective but this parenting style I inherited did not prepare me for the world. My nervous system found familiar trauma bond. I thought it was love. People pleasing because you were taught to be a good girl which meant I was too nice, no boundaries. I had to unlearn and relearn boundaries, assertiveness and made sure that my children never questioned my love for them the way I did growing up. I tried my best to keep them safe but not always successful. I would use some of those DV situations that my children witnessed as teaching moments because I did not want my sons and daughters to think this was normal. I taught my sons to respect women like you respect your sisters. Parenting while in a DV cycle was not easy but I did the best I could under such coercive conditions. Parenting, we role model what a safe, respectful relationship looks, sounds and feels like is not straight forward for all families. So do the inner work , reflect and tweak your parenting attachment style so the cycle does not continue. Need help check out my digital resources to guide step by step.
