🔎 **READ THE LABEL WITH MEL** 🔎
*Understanding what’s in your everyday products—one ingredient at a time.*
This week we’re looking at **phthalates**—a family of chemicals, not one single ingredient.
Phthalates are used for different purposes. Some soften plastics, while others can act as solvents or help fragrances last longer. In personal-care products, they have historically appeared in fragrances, nail products and some hair products.
So, are they harmful? The honest answer requires context. Research has identified **some phthalates** as endocrine-active chemicals, and certain members of the family have caused reproductive or developmental effects in human and animal studies. Human studies have also reported associations between exposure to particular phthalates and some health outcomes—but an association does not, by itself, prove that one chemical caused an illness.
Importantly, phthalates do not all have the same hazard profile. Risk depends on the specific chemical, dose, route and timing of exposure.
On labels, look for names such as **DEP, DBP, DEHP** or **DMP**. A fragrance mixture may simply appear as “fragrance” or “parfum”, so every individual component may not be listed. If you prefer to reduce exposure, you can choose fragrance-free, or pure essential oils or clearly labelled phthalate-free products.
This series is not about fearing every chemical. It is about understanding labels, considering the evidence and choosing what feels right for you and your family.
**Don’t fear the label—learn to read it.** 💚
