Big thanks to our amazing Sydney Language Festival presenters! 🎉
You inspired, challenged, and energised us with your knowledge and love for languages. The festival wouldn’t have been the same without you—what a privilege to learn from such a brilliant group of people.

Even many who have heard of Esperanto, the international language, or Klingon, the fictional language from the Star Trek movie series, are surprised to learn that over a thousand languages have been constructed over the past 900 years. This talk will compare a dozen or so of the most fascinating ones, in terms of purpose, development, vocabulary and philosophy.
Jonathan Cooper has been fascinated with languages from when he was a teenager, many years ago. He even invented his own language. Then he discovered Esperanto, the world’s most widely spoken and successful constructed international language. He is now president of Esperanto NSW and vice-president of the Australian Esperanto Association. He is also passionate about another international language: art. For over 30 years he worked at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney, as a museum educator.
