Dolly Parton. 1946 – 2026.
A true advocate & innovator in early childhood literacy. ✨
Many may know Dolly from her decade-spanning career in country music, but she also dedicated her life to starting a global literacy program that addresses inequality in access to high-quality children's books.
Inspired by her father, who was unable to read or write, Dolly started the Imagination Library in 1995, in her hometown in Tennessee.
Through the Imagination Library, families can access high-quality, age-appropriate books, regardless of income, receiving books free every month.
The program came to Australia in 2013, with incredible results. Books are selected with a focus on First Nations creators, Australian writers and publishers.
90% of caregivers surveyed said the program resulted in more quality family time together with books. And, children participating in the program were able read to more often and for longer, and had more books in their homes than comparable Australian children.
So, Dolly didn't just promote reading – she started a system that makes reading a part of everyday family life and helps young children learn the basic language skills that support their independent reading and learning later on.
Dolly has left a legacy in storytelling for generations to come.
